Me and my dearest beloved travel to the islands of Azores almost every year for my birthday, in midwinter. This year was our third time in visiting these green paradise islands, and we had a ambitious plan to visit 5 of them. More than ever before. We would land on the island of São Miguel, continue from there to Terceira, to Pico, São Jorge and Faial, before returning back to Pico and from there on out to mainland Portugal. In this thread I would like to share my blogs from the trip, island by island and here comes the first one - São Miguel! This was the first time round we actually had some time to explore the main island of the Azores. We had rented a car and with a good pace we drove around to some of the recommended stops. Starting with Lagoa do Fogo and from there to Furnas finally ending the tour with a small beach walk along the southern coast. The full post with photos and all you can read here: Azores - Island hopping - Hop 1

The Hop number 2 took us from São Miguel to Terceira. Terceira was the first island we ever visited in the Azores already a few years ago. Terceira made me fell in love with these green and wet islands and I was more than happy to return, even if it was only shortly. We met also a fellow Finn, who is currently living on the island in a beautiful seaside setting. I am quite jealous at her. Read a bit further here: Azores - Island hopping - Hop 2

Hop number 3 was just a short stop on Pico island. There we rented a car for the duration of the remaining holiday, got into terms of reading the boat schedule and almost crashed into some cows. From Pico we would sail to Sao Jorge and eventually to Faial, before returning and spending a small week more on Pico itself. So if you are planning to go and sail with the Atlantico line, there might be some useful info for you in here: Azores - Island hopping - Hop 3

With hop number 4 we took on the raging ocean for a short while, to reach the island of Sao Jorge. The ferries are small and the Atlantic is huge and my sea legs are not the greatest, but we made it to the hikers' heaven. São Jorge is magnificent. The shoreline is dramatic, as the cliffs climb up from the sea straight to 400 - 600 meters. The green jungle covers most of the cliffs and makes for great hiking. The shape of the island also guarantees a peculiar weather, some side of the island is always sunny! Full report here: Azores - island hopping - Hop 4

With the 5th hop we sailed from São Jorge to Faial and spent a few days there. We were kind of out of luck with the weather, when it comes to reaching the higher altitudes of the island. My mind was already gazing at Pico and I found it difficult to enjoy the island we were currently sitting on. But Faial is again a pretty island with its unique features of young earth and Scrimshaw art. Azores - Island hopping - Hop 5

Finally, I managed to squeeze out the final part from our trip to the Azore - Pico island! We spent there several days, wandering among vineyards and coast; getting lost in the mist at the highlands. The main event was climbing the highest peak of Portugal, but did we manage? Azores - Island hopping - Hop 6

I just rediscovered this thread and have enjoyed another virtual trip. My favorites from #3 are the midnight cows on their evening stroll, the windmill and the magnificent church, like something I would imagine would be seen in Bavaria. It's stunning, yet quaint, and in a simple way quite beautiful.
I'm saving the other "Hops" for a nice rainy day when I can spend some time daydreaming.
Thanks so much for sharing. I feel as if I've just gone on the third trip and returned, refreshed and energized.
I'm struck too by the high quality of your photos.
