The animals are happy. They have a quiet life again. That seems to be universal. There have been videos of lion prides sprawled our sunning and napping on reserve roads in Africa.

This does give me some hope that the backcountry trails will be open by August, and we can do the longer trip we’ve planned.

This does give me some hope that the backcountry trails will be open by August, and we can do the longer trip we’ve planned. Stakeholders (Muir Trail Resort, VVR) have FB posted about Sequoia Kings Canyon hosting a conference call of interested parties where part of the thoughts were that backcountry visitation is inherently “distanced” so it’s proceeding this summer had a lot of potential. I expect it’s the gateway communities and front country concerns that will ultimately determine backcountry access. In the East at Shenandoah trailhead parking overcrowding has prompted local sheriffs to close multiple boundary trail trailheads and access roads. Would the NPS really orchestrate a same day park entry just for that dates Wilderness Permit holders with no front country services or gateway community services? Ive actually done that sort of thing: flown in to SF, grab a rental car and drive to Yosemite, grab my reserved, late pickup WP and head out the same day. Summer dusk is late enough you can get a lot of trail miles in just with a very late afternoon start. /?d=n And Sierra NF is already operating in that fashion: backcountry open with everything else, including paved parking lots, closed. /?d=n

High Sierra Fan, we live within a day's drive of all Sierra trailheads, and would in any case take the campervan. It would be easy for us to be self-sufficient (even unto the potty, if need be) for a few days of acclimatization and then hit the trail. The right area might even allow us to make the trip there and back on a single tank of gas, though that's probably a stretch.

The May 15th Yosemite reservation window has been completely canceled. Per recreation dot gov and an update email.

If the governor takes the state to Phase 3, the park will open with reserve-ahead entry passes - nothing changing hands at entrance stations. There will be a limit on total number of vehicles entering. Even folks with park passes have to reserve ahead.

Would be so nice to see the park recover from the trampling hordes... I know some of what's going into place will linger... crossing my fingers.

Ha...I worked in Yosemite in 1978. At this particular date and the next few over Memorial weekend, it was a total traffic jam just like recent years. I almost didn't make it to work on time.

Odds are that's what prompted the legislation Like backcountry overcrowding and damage prompted the Wilderness Permit system.

Have confirmed that the wilderness permit confirmation gets one into the park. Print and have it ready to show at the entrance gate. Of course - the park has to be open....

They’ve really been radio silent in Tioga plowing. Sonora, granted a bit lower elevation, was completed a while ago and opened (closed again for weather, then reopened...). Any rumors on how that’s gone?

Up there (almost two weeks ago) and the road hadn't been touched from the gate west. Not sure of status since then. The snow wasn't deep and would just take a pass or two to get snow off of the road and Gaylor Lakes TH and Dana Meadows parking.
