First serious hot spell of 2021 here on the West Coast with triple digit temps common. A well shaded digital thermometer outside my residence shows 100.5F while a few miles away Los Gatos shows 107F. In our deserts a few 120F+ readings show with Palm Springs at 122F. Old AC unit has been out of freon for a few years ($4k replacement) so at dawn I open up doors/windows that let 65F cool air in though now at 3pm on my first floor it has risen to 76F and expect by 8pm will be 80F. Local coastal areas (50 mile drive) are still in the 60F range. Since we have cool ground temperatures, our water system pipes are in 60F range so I have a small hospital bed water mattress I can fill with cool water then relax on.

Some relief for drought-afflicted northern Illinois two days ago, albeit at the cost of a tornado that did some damage in the Chicago suburbs. Now we have cooler air and more possible rain all week.

Seattle is supposed to hit 99 over the weekend. WTH? I came up here to get away from that nonsense!

Stunningly fantastic, absolutely stunning. Like a wonderful fall day but without the (wonderful) smell of rotting leaves.
Early this morning it was 55 degrees with dew point of 50. Sweet. And it's almost July here in the hot and humid midatlantic.
We'll get 2-3 days of this before returning to more normal conditions.

Current week flash flood videos at Zion.
After the record Northwest heat, here is a summary of records broken:
..."Lytton, British Columbia, Canada, soared to an incredible 115.9 degrees (46.6 degrees Celsius) Sunday, then to 118.2 degrees (47.9 degrees Celsius) Monday and 121.3 degrees (49.6 degrees Celsius) Tuesday, not only smashing its all-time record, but that of the country, which had stood since July 5, 1937.
...The Dallesport Airport just across the Columbia River from The Dalles, Oregon, apparently tied an all-time record high for Washington state, soaring to 118 degrees on June 28. Four other locations in Washington state also recorded a 118-degree high during the heat wave.
...Portland (Airport): 108 on June 26, then 112 on June 27, then 116 on June 28 (107 on Aug. 8 and 10, 1981, and July 30, 1965)."

STOP RAINING!!!!! For the past 2-3 weeks, it has rained nearly every single day. Nearly all of it coming in scattered severe t-storms. I think I've ridden (rode?) my bide to work once over the past 3 weeks. 6" over the past two weeks, then 2" yesterday, and another 3" forecast over the next 3 days.

A good dump of rain all over the west, or even just on the mountains, would do so much to slow down the fire season. I have ridden I rode You got it right 🙂

Oh, and after three days with official temps over 110 (I think at my house it only broke that line once), it’s cooling a little for a few days. It’ll even drop below 100 for a few days late this week.
I’ve been getting up between 5 and 6ish to do my hiking (and yesterday, for the first time in months, biking!) before the heat hits—basically, my goal is to be done by 7:30. Once I recover from that, I can stay in the house with the AC and write, so there may be an up side. I’m not even inspired to go (grocery) shopping, so even I eventually run out of ways to procrastinate. The new novel is up to nearly 13K words.

I hear you. Rain is so needed. We are in a cool pocket but even here it is dry. Yesterday afternoon I checked our temperature and where my granddaughter’s mom is. 3pm we had 57* and she had 107*

On the plus side, the weeds in my garden are loving it.

On the plus side, the weeds in my garden are loving it. I'm mowing twice a week just to keep up. Reel mower, so it's helping me too. lol Been upper 80s/lower 90s for the last several days...lowest the humidity has been was 78%, so the "feels like" has been rough (triple digits.) No one ever says "at least it's a wet heat."
