The ceiling fan/light in Eldest Son’s room seems to have a bulb out. The problem is... I can’t figure out how to access the bulbs to find out/replace (I suspect they are halogen, like other fixtures in the house, so my last resort will be to replace the fixture (another good quarantine project, if I can mail-order the replacement). But I’m posting the photo here just in case someone knows the secret. It’s a Concord brand fixture, from 2000 or maybe 2001 (I think the house was finished in early 2001). Here’s the fan/light. I have managed to unscrew the only things I could find to unscrew (the housings for the pull-chains), and that did nothing. The light section also seems to unscrew from the fan part, though we couldn’t get it all the way—and realized before we got too far that it still wouldn’t give access to the interior. This will be the 3rd such fixture to have bulbs go out since we moved in—I think they have a basic 20-year life?

After removing the screws did you try and turn the bulb covering/housing?

After removing the screws did you try and turn the bulb covering/housing? Yeah. Nothing seems to turn. Of course, after 20 years it could just be frozen in place. I may try to contact the maker, but of course have no idea of model or anything, and doubt there’s anyone at work who could look through ancient records to see what it is. Fortunately, one bulb still works.

Concord brand fixture, from 2000 or maybe 2001 There's probably a sticker on the top of the fan with the model number, which is critical in finding online instructions. I'd advise doing that before trying anything at all. I found, via a quick search, that the "dome light fixture" is a "feature" of Concord ceiling fans. One place I checked advised that you use "sticky gloves", grasping both the metal housing on top and the glass dome to turn the dome counterclockwise to release it. Because the dome itself is glass, and will break if dropped (duh!), that site advised getting TWO persons to hold both pieces, both wearing "sticky gloves". One site recommended using duct tape thus to get hold of the dome: Note that the above photo is a bit confusing, since (at least to me), the tape is mounted to turn the glass dome CLOCKWISE - if I'm seeing it right. How to Change a Light Bulb or Remove the Glass Dome from Your Harbor Breeze FanYeah, I know: it's not the right brand, and they address multiple "styles" of fan - too generic. Model # is critical. These bozo engineers change stuff, willy-nilly, even from year to year on the same brand and model - but the number on the fan should accurately id the fan you have. You'll absolutely need to know which way to turn the dome before attempting - you could expend a lot of energy just tightening the damn thing! Still, I'd advise against doing anything until you actually look up the instructions online using the model number that's on the fan.

I strongly suspect the globe unscrews. Like you say, it might just be stuck in place.

Yep. The globe unscrews. It might be difficult to get started, so grab some help. They can hold the metal part while another person unscrews the globe. The vast majority of globes unscrew counter-clockwise. Sometimes tapping the globe with the rubber handle end of a screwdriver will loosen it some. Might mean 3 people all crammed under that fixture. As a last resort, you could lower the entire fixture, fan and all, by taking the screws out of the part on the ceiling. It'll be very heavy, so if you opt for this, be careful. Sorry I am not closer to be of more help.

I strongly suspect the globe unscrews. Like you say, it might just be stuck in place. In searching around on the web, I found that some light domes screw into place, and some domes have protruding places along the edge of the dome (hidden from you) which go into detents in the metal housing and are then turned to lock.

You'll likely need a BAK, beets (beet juice is a lubricant), O.R.A.N.G.E shoes, 4 regular size groundhogs, 2 shepherds hooks, and a fifth of single malt scotch (another type of lubricant).
If it all goes south you may need the famous Strap N Crap.

I don't know, zeke - the picture rebeccad included seems to have a metal housing that "folds under", effectively hiding the indentations - but, hey, I'm just guessing. I am the "handyman" around this house, but I'm pretty klutzy and stupid. I've installed a garbage disposal, and I can get into the clothes dryer we own (a Maytag) and clean it, replace belts or the heating element (after carefully watching the Iranian repairman we hired to do it the first time), and I have installed all of the (ceiling hugger) fans upstairs in this house (I had to crawl into the attic and install "mounts" for the damned things, one of which was on the other side of the chimney, which is located in the mid-section of the house, for God's sake!), and I've (illegally) installed new wiring in the bathrooms when I remodeled them. (I'm not certified to do this, of course.) ETA: IOW, I'm a "fool with a tool". :^D ETA ETA: Dammit! That will definitely end up in the "unintended innuendo" thread.

Thanks, everyone. I will look harder for a model number, but failing that will simply assume a standard thread and try harder with all of us participating Family bonding :D

How many backpackers does it take to change a light bulb?
We don't know yet. We haven't got it changed.
