When that clock ticks and the minute hand moves, their lamp probably falls over.

😄😄😄 You could be right. In the article photo and mine the hands are at different places so while I don’t see an obvious mechanism in the article photo, the hands do move. Or are moved, my photo is from some years back (Oct. 2014). and it looks like that may be the only clock in the building; here’s the west facing side that more directly faces Manhattan

I love old buildings; they have so much charm and character. That sort of lighthouse in the third photo is interesting as well. Curious: how many here have space set aside for libraries?

When we remodeled our basement my son, a skilled carpenter, built book cases along two walls of my den. They’re beautiful and over flowing with books. Sitting in my den is like being surrounded by hundreds of old friends. Still, there is not enough room for all my books. I have so many still stored in boxes.

hikerjer, do you take any special precautions to minimize dampness and/or high humidity in your basement library? Humidifier, or something that constantly circulates air? "Old friends" is a good description; I often feel myself relaxing just by picking up a book I've read several times. Add a cup of coffee or tea and it's even more like a visit. Perhaps that's why we read some books repeatedly.

No special precautions. I do run an electric air purifier fairly regularly in the room. However, we live a pretty dry climate and moisture and humidity generally aren't an issue, even in the basement. Also, we have forced air heating and that tends to keep the air pretty dry, at least in the winter when the furnace is running. Just isn’t an issue that I can see. Frankly, I never even thought of it until you mentioned it.

No special room here for libraries, but we have bookshelves in nearly every room, and books on them. That despite the major pruning we gave the library when we moved.

The lighthouse has an ice cream store in its ground floor and despite being at a totally tourist location has amazingly great ice cream.

The Kennan building in Sheridan Wyoming is my current home. No I do not have one of the cool balcony apartments. I am up on the third floor in the SW corner and face Main Street. The ones on the back side are actually larger. Constructed in 1908 during the ag boom that only lasted until WW1. The building is in wonderful condition and well maintained. It is metro living with most of the small city's features within easy walking or cycling distance.

rangewalker, I like the window treatments and decoration on the third floors, and the balconies. I'm guessing they're wrought iron and spill over in summer and fall with potted and trailing plants?

I'm guessing they're wrought iron and spill over in summer and fall with potted and trailing plants? They are. The building was built to be a retail and residence space since its construction. The building across the street in the background was hotel that is now apartments and retail too. I love the neighborhood.
