autumnmist, that’s the same ship. Actually rules agreed by all companies who do tourism there prevent more than one ship from being in any given area, or at least landing anyone. We saw another ship only once, and our staff commented that they weren’t supposed to be there.

We are back in the the US! Still have to get one final flight, LAX to SFO, and then get picked up by Eldest Son and drive 3 1/4 hours home. But this is the point we figured we were golden, as we could always get hold of a car and drive home (heck, we were willing to accept a flight to anywhere in the US and drive however long it took; we have our backpacking gear with us). We are still traveling with one last couple from the ship, who are also going to SF—kind of fun and kind of bittersweet as our group has been gradually splintered off.

We are home! The final 3-hour drive from SF might have felt a bit gratuitous, but we were so busy sharing stories with our son that it flew by (plus: for once, no traffic issues at all). We have begun both the sterilization process for all the stuff that needs it, washing for all the rest of the stuff, and sorting 2 months worth of mail. We’ll have to get on the horn and find out about which of our MD appointments are cancelled, etc. House and yard both need a fair bit of attention, so we’ll be busy for a while

plus: for once, no traffic issues at all Welcome back to the (virus-modified) US of A. Now you see (how could you not?) that it's not all bad - even if the old culture of egregious overconsumption still lies dormant, uncomfortably & impatiently writhing under the facade of empty malls and freeways. Yes, some people have started hoarding in order to keep their consumption up to pre-virus levels. Then there are at least a few of us who are cutting consumption to get by - and also as an interesting "exercise": Use less each day and find innovative ways to make what you have last longer. I don't eat eggs anymore because my daughter eats them daily for breakfast. Yesterday, in one of those moments of frenzy in front of the fridge (alliteration accidental - I'm not responsible), which is packed full (of course), my wife accidentally knocked an egg off the top of the new egg carton where it was perched when the old carton ran down to 1 egg: it splattered onto the tile floor, shattered. I heard the muffled curse from the next room, then there was a discussion on the matter of if, and how, to save the shattered egg. I altruistically volunteered to eat it, but that option was rejected. Good thing we just saw that article on freezing eggs (they'll last a year in there). We have begun both the sterilization process for all the stuff that needs it, washing for all the rest of the stuff, and sorting 2 months worth of mail. We’ll have to get on the horn and find out about which of our MD appointments are cancelled, etc. House and yard both need a fair bit of attention, so we’ll be busy for a while :) I still have a missing tooth that's awaiting an implant. I hate the bulky "tooth appliance", even though I'm sorely tired of whistling through that empty space at the front of my mouth. I was supposed to go in for a "final check" of the implant last Tuesday, but even I knew that would be cancelled. Well, there are worse things. Maybe I'll be able to don one of my ancient flannel shirts, a ragged pair of khaki pants, my old felt backpacking hat from the 70s and go out at Halloween as a "cedar chopper". (I've done it before, but I was thinking "Freddy Krueger" that time.)

Glad to hear you two are safely back in the USA. Quite a torture being a sailor looking straight down over boat rails at the sloshing sea.
Once you take care of unpacking, reorganizing, and slowing down, remember it is now prime time for the narrow window of your nearby North Table Mountain. I'm thinking of driving up there maybe Wednesday or Thursday when weather forecasts show sunny skies, minor breezes, upper 60F temps. No web reports, but after a long dry spell through February, we have received fair rains, maybe 2 or 3 inches in that area (black dot) that ought present a modest bloom.

Either your hat is on backwards, or you're not looking at what you're doing.

Either your hat is on backwards, or you're not looking at what you're doing. More than that, reuben : the guy in the picture, who is not me BTW, is wearing shorts, and could very well (most likely) be someone in a jungle - and, apparently, based on search keys in the picture below (found with a Google image search), Thailand. And, the hat is still on backwards, though I suspect that even you have sweated out a headband often enough to rotate your hat. The guy probably is also using a trick I use under my Stetson Airway: I put on a bandana, then the hat - so how the hat is positioned is not as important. Like they use to label it in newspapers: "file picture" - NOT the Hill Country. But, it's the "fake news", right? Looking more closely, that tree doesn't look anything like a stumpy little Texas tree, and all those jungle creeper segments on the ground around the guy in that picture back there? What could those guys @ "Texas Hill Country.com" have been thinking? Uh?
But the unscrupulous (I guess that depends on how you see the issue) guys on the website just grabbed an appropriate image from one of those "pixel dumps", like pixabay.com or wallpaperflare. But take more care than these guys did: the algorithms for seemingly intricate and detailed internet searches are suspiciously bereft of the sort of programming you might think they'd have. I clicked "Lumberjack, Man" on the wallpaperflare website and got this: Another web site from Arkansas has the same Thai logger chopping trees "the right way" in Arkansas! I imagine Brad's Tree Care doesn't have much of an advertising/promotion budget, though.

davesenesac, thanks for the reminder. We'll have to see if going out there is reasonable.

My favorite description of seasickness, from a dear old friend and ex-Navy Captain: He spent the day staring in open-mouthed adoration at the sea...
