One of my brothers moved with his family from the Bay Area to Brooklyn a few years ago and said he has seen HUGE rats up on the street there. There were several elk not 50 yards from Broadway this morning here in Jackson, WY.

At first I thought this thread was about hockey. At least "The Day After Tomorrow" had ice.

3 mt lions were seen together on the streets of Boulder. I might've said cougars, but they are fairly common in Boulder.

Coyotes are being seen on the empty streets of San Francisco Kinda expected. There have always been quite a few coyotes in SF, just normally not out in the streets during the days. There have also been a few mountain lions seen in SF, but usually in places such as parks. Such as Stern Grove, McCarran Park or Mt. Davison. IIRC, coyotes sometimes travel around 100 miles in a 24 hour period. So they are just about everywhere possible. FWIW, I have seen coyotes in my backyard in Reno as well as in a Safeway parking lot near the middle of DOWNTOWN Reno, but that was after midnight. I also saw a coyote cross Bell Road here in Auburn, CA just last week. Who says coyotes are smart? This one was the dumbest animal I have ever seen cross a road. It was amazing it wasn't killed on that busy road. It almost got hit by around six different cars but made it by pure luck. That was in the middle of the day. Out here, I have seen smarter deer. I have actually seen them watch for traffic and wait before crossing roads. Tons of deer in this area. I see almost them every time I go outside. But I never hear of any of them being hit by cars in this area. -Don- Auburn, CA

Is our claim to our civilization really that tenuous? Will we have to reclaim it when lockdowns are lifted? The whole scenario is unsettling, not b/c of the animals but b/c of how easily our control can be disrupted.

That we’re somehow separate from nature in a “civilization” bubble has always been mostly an illusion. Mountain lions live happily, if stealthily, within the San Diego city limits down in the arroyos that vein the city.
Coyote pushing out from the shadows as traffic diminishes happened quickly, and when the traffic comes back they’ll watch from the shadows again. L. A. traffic cameras show a nighttime wildlife scene the commuters know nothing about. 😊
Part we might be seeing an expansion now that some of the devastation the predator wars of suppression inflicted in the populations has eased. Predators naturally expand and explore as their original territory gets full. Though how full New York State has to be for coyotr to keep showing up in Manhattan is a bit boggling. Lol

As well as "I Am Legend." 12 Monkeys... which also has a relevant plot.

Lol. City people.
Though Zelda was real. A long time Battery Park resident wild Turkey (possibly from Staten Island as there’s a big flock on the grounds of a long closed hospital). And there was photo proof of the black bears (caught on bridge traffic cams iirc).

San Francisco has plenty of infrequently disturbed places, especially on private land, in parks, and shores zones. Vegetation and tree density given the wet, foggy, cool marine climate can be considerable for an earth den mammal. Besides an abundance of squirrels, there are feral cats and many miniature dogs.
