I received this, this morning.
"Zeke, We are now in port at the quay in Montevideo, Uruguay, with hopes of disembarking on Friday to catch a flight home via Santiago, Chile, LAX, and SFO. They are working hard to get everyone off the ship, though a few people may be stuck making the 3.5 week voyage to the ship’s home port in the Netherlands. That is a non-starter for us; I have been extremely seasick every time the waves get at all interesting, and honestly doubt I would survive the voyage (I would probably jump overboard and swim ashore rather than go through that hell).
At this point all the family is well, and Second Son is moving home, so we’ll all be together. His classes are all on-line for spring quarter, his job is kaput, and his landlord bought out their lease at a good price, so he figured his best bet was to come to Chico. Should be interesting to have all 4 of us together again."

zeke, thanks for the update. Did the ship actually make it to Antarctica? Sorry to read that seasickness has been so prevalent. I hope she doesn't have any problems getting a flight home and isn't quarantined at the airport b/c she had been on a ship previously. And hopefully any disappointment from the voyage will be dispelled when the family is safely back together again.

autumnmist, yes they made it to Antartica. As she mentioned in the first email, they have had some difficulties getting off the ship to get on an airplane. Other than that, and the seasickness, they seem to be fine.

Small ships and big waves are a recipe for seasickness disaster. Always reminds me of my favorite story about a sea caption who delivered a landlubber to a distant island in those conditions: "The only thing that kept him alive what his hope of dyin'"

I hope rebeccad gets home safely soon. Who knows why some people get seasick and others don't. I never had the problem, but I've gotten sick on carnival rides.
