Do you all wear sock liners as well? I do have some liners that I only use in extreme cold which is more work related.

I do have some liners that I only use in extreme cold which is more work related. LOL! I was going to post something about the socks I wore in Greenland... I wore synthetic socks that I used as liners inside of Expedition Weight Smartwools inside of -50 degree Wool socks. These all went inside of -100F boots...and often I would have to throw in foot warmers by the end of the night. This year, I'm adding aerogel insoles to the mix to try and keep the cold at bay.

This year, I'm adding aerogel insoles to the mix to try and keep the cold at bay. As long as there is room inside your boots. Once the feet get really cold it's tough to warm up, for me anyhow.

Well, I normally wear a size 9.5 in boots and the ones I got are like a size 13 so I have just enough room...and I can always throw in a foot warmer packet or two if I get chilled. That's what I did last spring.

I use a very nice synthetic that does not stretch. Lorpen PrimaLoft midweight is what I wear and love them! Here is a cool review site I found them at. Note they say why socks get different ratings and Smartwool PHD socks do come in first place. I just prefer the all synthetic as they dry faster. m.outdoorgearlab.com/Hiking-Socks-Reviews

I look for a certain composition and build rather than a brand. Wool blends are my go to sock material, with most being 50% merino or more. I'll wear a mid-weight sock with minimal cushion year-round for the day's activity. In camp in the winter I'll change into thin merino liners beneath heavier, cushioned wool blends.
I've also worn plastic bags on my feet beneath my socks because vapour-barrier liners can be pretty pricey.

Do you all wear sock liners as well? No need. FitsSocks are contoured and sized to your foot so there is no slipping. A little kinesio tape on the sides of my feet where they are sensitive, and I'm good to go. A hiking buddy who always runs marathons also wears these socks.

What boot do you and Mike use on the ice? Mike actually donated his boots to me - Sorels I don't remember which boots he used this last year. I'm sure he'll pipe up.

My favorite are the Smartwool "Ultralight" hiking socks. Wear them year-round (I don't do the crazy arctic cold hiking though.) I think they're about 70% wool. I don't like the super dense weaves, like the PhD's or Darntough. The weave on the Ultralights are a little more open and stretchy. They're comfy, light and dry quickly (really breathable). I never wear liners.

Wearing a liner was recommended to our scouts for long treks, so I was curious. I have never tried wearing them, but then again, I've never done long treks. I know some who like duct tape on sensitive areas. Whatever works.

I am personally a Wigwam fan, but I do own a couple of pairs of Smartwools. I get a couple of years out of the Wigwams before they are toast.

Liner socks are conventional wisdom. And I think that the old ragg wool socks that were the go-to for backpacking when I was young needed them, because the socks a) fit poorly, and b) itched like crazy. But I also think liners are going the way of the passenger pigeon because you just don't need them with the newer fitted, high-quality socks.

By the way, I use my Smartwool socks for backpacking for 2 or 3 seasons, then migrate them to daily use at home and get fresh ones for hiking. They last a long time, even under daily use. I just like my socks more fluffy when hiking--my feet are very low-volume and I depend on socks to help smooth out the gaps.

Mike actually donated his boots to me - Sorels I don't remember which boots he used this last year. I'm sure he'll pipe up. Grew up with nothing but Sorel in our house; five pairs of 'em at the door in winter time. Northern Ontario's January highs used to sit around -25C. I know some who like duct tape on sensitive areas. Whatever works. I tape up some toes. They like each other too much, to my detriment.
