The photo looks like it's on the flanks of Mt. Tammany, right at the gap itself where I-80 comes through. A couple warm days in a low snow year made it vulnerable. Several areas near here have burned in the last 10-15 years, most recently about a mile north on the AT.

Watching this tonight on my news feed. We've had so much rain an hour south of there that I can't believe it is happening.

That Water Gap has had several big rain storms in the last few months, but it runs off so quickly compared to snowmelt soaking in. The local state forest facility on Rt 206 had increased the fire risk to the level just below "high" last week. This is quite similar to the year that it burned near the Catfish Fire Tower.

It's now reported as mostly contained at 80 acres. Even by NJ standards that's pretty small. Per crawford's comment, previous rains probably kept it from being worse. link

I guess that gap in the water makes it more fire prone.

Wow. East coast forest fires are usually an April/May thing.

After a few rainy days, the local forest office decreased the posted risk to "low".
