At this time of year, I'd much rather be in trouble on Mt. Washington in WA or OR than NH. I drove up to the NH peak in mid-October on a bright sunny day. The wind chill was brutal.

I drove up to the summit on a bright sunny August day. And the windchill was brutal (single digits, horizontal ice streamers on the building roof railings ).

Yeah, I know. Most people don't care about middle names.

I drove up to the NH peak in mid-October on a bright sunny day. The wind chill was brutal. I've been up there in the winter once. Gorgeous sunny day around 15F and surprisingly little wind. The rime ice was intense and very beautiful. On things like the observatory you could see the effect wind had on its formation.
I was up there before digital and have no idea where my photos of the trip are but this will give you an idea:

I've climbed Mt Washington (NH) in both summer and winter. Winter, -15F clear and calm. Summer, 32*F snowing/freezing-rain sideways.
Winter was more fun.

This is fairly spectacular The road cycling ride up that behemoth is one of the toughest rides in the US. Long and STEEP.

I have also climbed Mt Washington a few times in the summer. The tourists who drove up there stare at you. One time we went to Great Gulf and wanted to summit but weather didn't cooperate. First day it rained so hard it tended to choke you trying to breath and there were inches of water moving over the ground. Made me dizzy. When it cleared the wind started. Sustained 85+ mph winds on the summit. The Gulf was pretty quiet but the howling/moaning from the peaks was creepy.

So my aunt who lives in Seattle sent an article about this rescue. The guy was trail-running in the Duckabush River Valley, a place I visited with my father many years ago. I think I was 8 or 9. We camped 2 nights while he fished and I marveled at all the trees. It's beautiful country, but tough terrain. Glad the guy made it out.
