Fort Hood is in Texas. :-) But I hope I never have to emulate this guy.

Give the woman a break. Hood Canal, Ft. Hood. Probably named for the same guy (who probably never saw either one).
If he was near Hood Canal, which is an arm of Puget Sound and no canal at all, it was lowland stuff. No snow, most likely, but the underbrush could be nasty. Though on a trail that wouldn’t be a problem, still...

My apologies. He was near Hood Canal in Washington State, not Fort Hood. I misread the link.

Google 360 view from Mt. Washington. If you spin around so that you're looking more or less southeast, that's Lake Cushman in the right foreground, Hood Canal to the left of that, then Mt. Rainier in the distance. (I could be wrong - I haven't actually been there.) :^D I think I could easily break my leg (or head) just about anywhere here. goo.gl/maps/pJiFaTchZS88d45Y9Much the same view from upper slopes of Mt. Elinor. goo.gl/maps/4KUgwVGtjG5Dxxp66Just checking to see what Hood Canal looks like, and how someone might get injured there, though I have no way of actually knowing where the man was other than "The hiker was rescued near Olympic National Park ..." from the article. There are a lot of trails in the area northwest of the canal, southeast of Olympic NP. The views above are both from within Olympic NP, of course.

8 hours, not 8 miles.....
Not a fun walk in the woods.

I'd rather crawl for 8 hours/miles than cut my arm off.

Google 360 view from Mt. Washington. I thought that was in New Hampshire?

How far would I crawl not to die? As far as it takes.

Wow- I made two mistakes in citing the article. Guess I need to do a better job of cleaning these new glasses.
Sorry, folks.

I thought that was in New Hampshire? :) I know what you're trying to say. (I think.) But: Mt. Washington, New Hampshire Mt. Washington, Washington State Oregon ETA: So, I guess no one caught my mistake? The above is actually Mt. Washington (Oregon) This is Mt. Washington, Washington State: Mt. Wash, Wash (4,400') Mt. Wash, Ore. (7,795') Mt. Wash, N.H. (6,288') The "360s" I previously posted were done because I was simply trying to visualize the area, having never actually traveled there. It is my opinion that the hiker who broke his ankle was actually on a trail somewhere down there below, where there are apparently a lot of trails in parks west of Hood Canal, way below where the 360s I posted were taken:
