In a couple of weeks I'll be heading out for a 3-4 day trip. I'm in central Texas, and figured this time of year Arkansas might be ideal, due to proximity and relatively mild weather. I'm thinking of doing the Eagle Rock Loop, which sounds like a pretty nice hike. Anyone know of any other areas I should consider, maybe in the Ozarks or elsewhere in the Ouachitas? I'm pretty unfamiliar with the area, I ordinarily head west for my backpacking trips.

The area of the Ouchita trail right on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border is nice--I did a short trip there with my boys several years ago. Actually, I think the nicest terrain in that area is on the Oklahoma side of the border.

The area of the Ouchita trail right on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border is nice I second this. Talimena State Park to Queen Wilhelmena would be a nice section but pretty aggressive for 3-4 days. Maybe you could end at Winding Stairs or something like that.

The Buffalo National River area is really nice.

The Ouachita has some really nice hiking without having to climb through rock glaciers east from Winding Stair Campground, Oklahoma to Queen Wilhelminia State Park, Arkansas.

Thanks, y'all, for the great recommendations. Clearly I need to at the very least look into the western end of the Ouachita Trail! I'll be doing some research, and just sent off for the Tim Ernst guidebook. Foxalo, one of these days I'm hoping to float the Buffalo, I've been wanting to get up there for years, it sounds like a great place to backpack as well. So many trails, so little time!

Thanks, Marty. Pretty sure Charlie Williams used to participate in the old forums, wonder if he'll ever find his way back? I wound up hiking the 50 or so mile stretch from Talimena to Queen Wilhelmina State Park, thanks to everyone for the advice. I'll get a TR up in a day or two.
