And to think, ten years ago my husband I were set up in the prime spot for viewing on Southside Drive, front row amongst about twenty folks.
From what I gather, this area will now be closed.

They showed people set up IN the river and shoreline damage from the crowds.

Yes, it depends on the year, too. There sometimes is a sandbar in the middle of the river, accessible from the north side. Our first year, it was solid icy snowpack at that spot. (Actually the first year that we went at this time of year, it was too stormy...no sunshine.) this is 2016...
