God, this is a hard group to please. Try hanging out on a climbing forum. Now that's a tough crowd.

For many people, myself included, there is no perfect place to live. Nothing is perfect. So I've resolved to have a home base and travel. That travel could be to another state, another region of the country, or another continent. Then I come home, readjust, and eventually start to plan the next trip. That's pretty much my tack. As much as I'd like to live in a western mountain community, most are out of my pay grade and too far from family. So travel and a home base works well. Not ideal, but is a good compromise. If I were younger (60 and retired now), I might think of things differently. As I get older family means more to me than when I was more self centered.

I'll retire in a few years. I'm seriously thinking about throwing a backpack in the truck and going on tour to see friends and relatives, places I've been to, and places I haven't. With any luck this will take several months. The first few destinations will likely be NC, FL, LA, and TX. After that I have no plan, but NE, SD, CA, and many other places will be on the list. I'll have to judge some by weather - NE in February doesn't sound like much fun, but I need to see someone there before he dies.
So, beware. Some of you may find me on your doorstep in a few years.

Same here, Reuben!
As for Hikerchick395's comment: " I will be a "local" this year...living half my life here and learning to pronounce Sabrina SAH-BRY-NAH instead of SAH-BREE-NAH."
Please note that historians agree that the local pronunciation is not historically correct. It was originally Sabreena...locals may attribute their newer version to reduce oxygen in their brains....?
I've lived in the Napa Valley for forty years. Still not a local!

I've lived in the Napa Valley for forty years. Still not a local! Funny how that works. We lived in Seattle for about 10 years. We were pretty-much honorary natives at that point, because "everyone" was from somewhere else. We then moved to Iowa for about 8 years. One of the things I didn't like there was this feeling that even if we grew old and died there, we'd never be Iowans. We'd always be outsiders. We've settled in Kansas ever since, where the attitude is somewhere in between. Politics notwithstanding, Kansans definitely have a more "live and let live" attitude, overall, then Iowans. We like that.

Yep. I recently talked to a winemaker who worked for four years in Burgundy before starting his twenty year career in Bordeaux. He admitted that they still call him "The guy from Burgundy!' in Bordeaux.

Education (San Diego), then my research position (La Jolla), then my lab head getting a professorship in another city on the east coast.
So I’ve never been far from amazing, though different, outdoors opportunities though my choices were driven by my profession not my recreation. (Though try convincing my dad of that when every university I applied to was right on an ocean, lol)

Past and present: Having been military (adult member, dependent, and contractor), it’s been pre-determined for most of my life (adult is Southern New Mexico/El Paso for 80% of the time; actually spent most of my childhood on American bases overseas). School and a stint as a non-govt contractor landed me in Los Angeles, where luckily I have friends and family. Lots of neat stuff, but not a place to grow old.
Future: Getting into daily biking after this so looking to retire in Tucson AZ. There’s multiple modes of transport from there or Phoenix to see f n’f in California or Los Angeles or wherever... plus beat the heat every summer.
If I take any detours from the above it’ll be for plenty of money. Pretty simple I’d say.
