Ugh. My schedule is tight in Feb and March and it looks like we will be shut out of Aravaipa Canyon west side. Most of the permits are already taken for March.
I am looking for 2 nights within 2 hours of Phoenix, ideally a loop backback trip of 10-20 miles, with some water and, of course, great scenery.
Late Feb/Early March
I think some options might be: 1) Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness 2) West Clear Creek Wilderness 3) Sycamore Canyon
Both look fantastic, but each would require swimming to do the entire length of each canyon. This won't work for my partners.
There is lots of hiking around Prescott, but it sounds like some of the trails in Pine Mountain Wilderness and Castle Creek are in pretty bad shape. Bushwhacking won't work for our group.
We did the Superstitions last year (White Rock Spring, Dutchman, Needle loop) and it was fantastic after the snow filled the creeks.
I'd welcome any suggestions.

I am guessing cold and snow will precluded this as an option. Ditto for Mt. Lemmon near Tucson. We probably need to stay below 5,000 ft or to avoid colder temps.

That looks very cool. I have not spent any time on the western slope of the Rockies. Now I have one. My BFF and his wife are renting a house in Phoenix for February and March, so we will try to do a trip. She's a newbie so nothing crazy. Last year we hit Superstition Wilderness (my first time) after the big snow event and it was fantastic as all the drainages were full of water. We had planned to do Aravaipa but the flows were dangerously high (> 200 cfs, normally 20) so we bailed on that. My first to trip Aravaipa was about 20 years ago. In February, we saw one group (2 people) in 4 days. Of course, they came strolling by our camp at Horse Camp Canyon as I was standing there in my underwear after taking a bath in the creek! Go figure. But Aravaipa has gotten popular, even in February. The issue 40 permits per day for each entry (east and west), so I think we will be shut out. Those places in AZ I cited above are tributary canyons of the Verde River north of Phoenix. They look spectacular, but doing the whole canyon would require 2-3 days and lots of swimming. That would be tough in Feb/March and not something my friends would consider (OTOH, I am part yeti and love the water)
