Cweston, I am on my 24th year of taking a hiking trip out west. Been to many of the top places people on this board and previous forums have recommended. I will unequivocally say that the sawtooths are spectacular. In fact I booked tickets today for this fall so good that I am doing a repeat visit).
During my first trip, the Alice - toxaway loop was the key to the trip. Did a relaxed 3 day 2 night trip.
This year, sawtooth lake and likely Cramer lakes, will be the destination. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend the sawtooths.

I use a Idaho Benchmark Road & Recreation Atlas as an overview map. I hadn't thought of trying one of those; thanks for the tip. I think I'll give it a try. Tried it. The Sawtooths are split across four pages though they'd fit on less than one if centered. Not very useful.

I do feel kinda bad that the first suggestion did not workout for you. Aw, no problem there. I'm sure it will come in handy in other areas that are not as inconveniently spread across so many pages. Just an unlucky way they fell out for the Sawtooths, at least for overview purposes. I appreciate both pointers.

I just found this. Maybe? it's the overview map I'm looking for. Yep, that's exactly what I was looking for. Good overview of the range with decent contour lines and (apparently) good trail markings. I tried to buy this some weeks ago direct from the publisher's website (www.adventuremaps.net), but their purchase/cart system was broken. It seems to be targeted at MTBers, but I mainly wanted an overview of the range anyway, so I'm a happy camper.

I'm stuck in the Southeast mountains of NC/TN/VA and we have small wilderness areas like Bald River/Upper Bald and Citico Creek and Kilmer/Slickrock and Big Frog and Cohutta etc---and none of them require any kind of permits or designated camping spots or registration. So I go in whenever I want and camp wherever I want for however long I want.
Is this how it works in the Selway-Bitterroot and the Frank Church and other places in Idaho? Which areas are the most restrictive and which are totally open for backpackers---without fees or permits or registrations etc etc.

So, I am heading back to the sawtooths this September. Last time the key part of the trip was a 3 day 2 night backpack doing the alice /toxaway loop.
Looking for ideas for this trip. I think sawtooth lake will be one of the hikes, not sure if we will do it in a day hike or make it a backpack...any suggestions on how to make it a two night backpack.
Also, any other suggestions for short backpacks or dayhikes. We usually shoot for 7-8 miles per day with packs, 7-10 miles for day hikes.
Thanks
