Sounds disgusting. Nut butter, yes, but with oil and sugar (I hate sweetened nut butters), and craisins (which *might* be good). I’d say to buy regular old Adams or the natural PB of your choice (or fresh-ground if you have access to a store that sells it), and then also carry along dried fruit, etc. But, with food as with clothing, I believe in “layering” so that I can pick and choose what works well at a given moment.
Recently, I’ve started adding peanut butter to my oatmeal, and it’s good. I did it because I had to give up yogurt—lactose is causing me problems—and wanted more protein for breakfast. But I like it, and it’s going into the arsenal for backpacking. I think I need to find a sturdy screw-top container that is pretty light and just plan on carrying a lot of PB (okay, the plastic jars that Trader Joe’s PB comes in are probably as good as it’ll get for that).

rebeccad I will mention that RumiDude didn't have much luck with his coglan's tubes for his pb. The PB didn't want to squeeze out. I think he ended up opening the fill end and spooning it out.

For peanut butter, buy some of the specialty nut butter jars from Jif. They are smaller. I carry one empty when starting international trips, so I can buy local pb which in Europe inevitability comes in a glass jar. Had a bad experience with a glass jar of pb in my pack in Berlin! For just a weekend, I can use a McCormick spice jar.

Yeah, I gave up on those things decades ago. For the two of us for 7 or 8 days, a full pound of PB isn’t outrageous, especially if we are adding it to oatmeal as well as eating it on some lunches.

I haven't used food tubes in a very long time as well. My reason was it seemed like they were sort of one use. Cleaning them isn't easy and on the same token they are hard to get the last drop of food out of them. The small plastic jars you can buy some brands in are better.
But when I was using them, what I generally put in them is smooth peanut butter mixed with a lot of honey. Seemed to squeeze better and is very tasty.
I guess if I was seriously weight conscious I could seal up some packs with my Foodsaver. Then could probably just cut a corner off and squeeze the pack.

P.S. I was kind of hoping this thread was about Ghee when I first saw it.

Coincidence but I was looking for small packets of nut butters last weekend at Whole Foods and they carry several brands made from various nuts. They were not inexpensive and if you are wanting to carry a pound the price would be prohibitive. I’d just go with the economy size jar if it is not heavy glass.
Trader Joe’s carries a Nut Butter that is a mix of various nuts in a light plastic container of 6 oz. that stuff is good.

packed with good fats thanks to coconut oil
Uh, coconut oil has more saturated fat than lard.

It’s a bit of a challenge, but it works, and is still cheaper than buying the little packets (but produces just as much plastic waste). I’m thinking that we eat enough that the jar is worth it. I’d love a silicone jar—something that can deform and shrink as it gets less full. Then you’re back to the tubes, which have all the problems you mentioned.

Mixed bag, but still not something you want to be consuming in large quantities. I’ll stick with peanuts and almonds, and maybe try out that nutbutter Swiftdream mentioned at Trader Joe’s.

TRUE I guess, I have always thought coconut oil was very bad, stopped long ago eating say banana chips as they are fried with the stuff. Apparently recently they have decided it is not as bad as once thought, but some are going overboard saying it is great, so I found a more credible source.
I do not like that trail butter does not list isn't nutrition information , just ingredients.
Imagine though that it is using this to make a no stir version of peanut butter. The difference in Adams no stir (with some part of palm oil) is an increase in saturated fat from 2.5 g to 3.5 or 12% to 17% of recommended serving. I hate stirring, and even after stirring I find it too runny so I am willing to pay the penalty.
But I agree trail butter is probably not worth it. On the trail, I nuts less dry than butter, so I can't remember when I last used it.

I don't often eat nut butter these days, but I have tried similar in reviews for the site and most are fine. However, my choice will always be single serving packets. I love Legendary nut butters. They are low sugar.

sarbar Low sugar? I will only use nut butters that are no sugar. That’s part of why I stopped using Justins, because so many of their nut butters are sweetened. Honestly, in a nut butter, all I want is nuts and maybe a little salt (I do like to get the salted kind for hiking, though use unsalted at home).
