Went ahead and ordered a Zpacks rain poncho thingy. That will give me my 2nd piece of gear that will form my solo backpacking sleep system. @idahowalker , very interested in this. Perhaps you could elaborate over in Gear Closet? About 3 years ago my wife suggested that I, also, do solo trips. After some thought, I decided to experiment with going light weight. My first purchase towards me going on solo trips was to get a ZPacks Duplex Triplex Tarp. The tarp came in handy on backpacking trips with my wife. Last year I used to tarp on a 5 night solo trip. It rained on several days of that solo trip, I used the tarp as my rain gear. The tarp worked very well as rain gear, so I decided to get a ZPacks rain poncho that opts as a bathtub floor for a tarp tent. My total weight for shelter/rain gear would be 8.9 ounces. Which would, for solo trips, bring my base weight down to 7ish pounds.

@idahowalker, I have a question. What do you do when your rain gear is busy being your tent and you need to go out in the rain, to cook or to answer the call of nature or...?

There was a trend of folks in my SAR team (when I was part of it) where the guys started to use poncho tarps. I have a 14 oz tyvek tent (Tarptent used to make one) that I would take. There wasn't a lot of talk but I noticed over time they stopped using poncho tarps and started getting very light tents. A friend who has the Gatewood Cape (Six Moon) just takes a second poncho.
