Looking to try combining base and midlayer. Anyone have experience with this?
Thanks, Mark

No personal experience. Here's a link: www.montane.co.uk/mens-c1/clothing-c25/insulation-c6/extreme-smock-p81Looks like a great, versatile jacket for around town, cragging or resort skiing. May put it on my "maybe" list. Not a fan of anoraks though, they are a pain to put on/take off. Not sure how it would be called a combo base/mid-layer. It is an outer layer garment. At 1120 grams = 2.5 pounds. Not really for backpacking or fast and light mountaineering. Can see why it would be good for SAR due to the features. I'd need to see it in person. Given the product description, can't figure out why it weighs so much; maybe all the features? Reviews seem to say it is good with a tee shirt down to around 30 F, not sure if it as while active or at rest. That's a lot of weight for not much thermal gain. Also, why combine your base and mid layers? That defeats the point of layering.

Bump. Come on, some of you must have some input on this.

As with any "soft shell," it would seem useful only for cold winter activities during falling dry snow. I'd personally still want a base layer underneath.

Unless you sweat very little or only plan to use this in extreme cold, I'd think this anorak would be bad. Venting helps, but only does a partial job. A wool sweater under a windshirt would actually work better than this for me. Once wetted out, this is not going to keep you warm, especially if you have foregone other layers. Like I said, in extreme cold, this might be the ticket with layers, but I don't think it replaces any. I have a Gore-Tex piece like this one which was awful for hiking, but I use for a layer under rain gear when I'm out on the ocean getting sprayed and in downpours. I'm using the premise this piece would be for backpacking, though.

Any kind of anorak is a big “no” for me, as I need to have full venting options. And I’m with those who keep the layers separate so they can be adjusted. Maybe if I lived in the far far north where it is seriously cold? But I might not be backpacking then

Too "extreme" for me. I wouldn't want that unless I was trekking across Antarctica. If I need that much insulation, it needs the flexibility of layers and front zips.
