Just picked this up at the local bookstore today. I've only had time to page through it but it's an absolutely beautiful volume that has to be the definitive source of information on my beloved Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area. Far from a traditional guidebook (there are plenty of them out there) it covers just about every aspect of the wilderness area you can imagine. It will take some time to get though the whole thing, but it's a read I'm really looking forward to. All profits from the sales of the book go dhe Absaroka-Beartooth Widerness Foundation. What is the name of that spire in the center of the cover?

Coincidentally, it’s named “the Bear’s Tooth”. Lends its name to the entire range.

I am a member of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation Thanks Jer! I wish more wilderness areas had foundations looking over them. I can see Absaroka's from my playland but know so little about them. I will pick-up this volume soon. I think us Wyoming hikers, like the rest of the State, are so freaking libertarian that are by nature horrified of organizing for a common good.

Man, living so close you've got to get over there more often. They are really are a fantastic mountain range. Many consider them to have among the finest hiking in the country.

Many consider them to have among the finest hiking in the country. While I was living in Billings working on a refinery project, I was working 7/12's, but made time for a couple of over-nighters out of Red Lodge/Absaroka. It was a nice change from the Sierra. Less traffic, just seemed more like a real wilderness experience. As beautiful as the sierra are, it somehow has an urbanized feel to it even when you are off trail. Maybe it is the traffic hell one has to go through to get there.
