So this week has been an amazing week for my wife & I for owl spotting. In just a 40 km drive east of town, we found 2 Northern Hawk Owls and 3 Northern Pygmy Owls. To put the Pygmy Owl day in perspective ... in the past 30 years of driving the region, we've only ever spotted 2 NPOs along the road (seen a few more around home and on trail, but only 2 driving in the past 30 years). This was one of the days that I was glad I had my big heavy 800mm lens along! An exceptional photo!!!!!

My favorite grassland bird is the Meadowlark. My favorite raptor is the American Kestrel. Just for you Bradmacmt! Not a bad choice for favorite birds. Meadowlark is from 2007 near Kamloops, BC. The Kestrel is in Yellowstone from spring 2018.

Thanks Pete... for me, there’s just nothing like the song of the Meadowlark.
Great photos... the little Kestrel is so incredibly beautiful to me. I’ve actually held a slightly injured one in my hands.

I was painting the garage door when I heard a commotion in the air behind me and something hit the ground. The resident hawk which is often perched on the pole across the street had swooped down to catch a sparrow mid flight. At first its wings were spread wide over its prey (which would have made a good shot) but it took me a few seconds to get my phone out of pocket to snap this pic (you can barely see the sparrow in its talons).

I took this photo during my trip to Florida with Roger and Zeke. Snowy Egret, if I recall correctly.

Female sooty grouse, dendragapus fuliginosus, a large forest dwelling bird of the Sierra Nevada, against blooming manzanita they blend in with nicely.
Love these creatures. I occasionally come upon these birds and they sometimes have the interesting behavior of not taking flight even if say are within 5 feet and instead just slowly wander away cackling and pecking at the ground while watching if I am stepping closer at which they will take to the air loudly. If I move slowly speaking quietly not looking at them, can often get my camera out and in position for some photos like the above from July this summer. This female was up in the Glen Alpine Creek basin of Desolation Wilderness. The male makes an otherworldly low pitch series of "booms'.
birdsna.org/Species-Account/bna/species/soogro1/introductionIn 2018 another fair use decision was made to image copyright laws per this link.

Comments following the article are also worth reading. It is good news for Internet users because linking images if done considerately makes it valuable. If someone wants to stop hot linking they can add a copyright notice. The majority of web imagery has trivial value while only a small minority may, thus it makes sense to not by default consider every image non-copyable especially if a link is provided as that is actually beneficial to other sites as it generate more traffic.
As members here are aware of, I put copyright notices and my name only on my more serious images while not on those like the above. I actually don't care if others use any images I post online if credited or linked, because they are all small downsized renditions of the larger originals with more detail that I may consider of value and do not put online. I sometimes receive requests for image use and usually just allow such without a fee and may provide larger copies as long as I am credited on used images. There are lots of images on the web I will make hot copy links to and may or may not provide a link to under the image. In this era there are many social media image posters that tend to post full 100% camera outputs to the web without copyright notices because either they 1) don't care if people use their image 2) don't know how to process or copyright images 3) want others to view their larger images at largest sizes and are too lazy or unconcerned to warn of copyright.

I like when there is a bit of a story behind the photo. For example in my first post , the first is a kestrel I call Bert. it is a female . Took me several attempts but eventually she let me take photos at around 6 metres away. The second is a female brown falcon that also lets me get pretty close, however the male flies away at around 15 metres if the female is not there. (wrong photo..that one is kestrel N3, also a female) The fairy-wren 9not a wren) is one that comes out to have a look when I walk by then goes back into the bush once I have passed. This is a young blackbird that has been around my front yard in the last few days my cat follows it around but does not touch it. It has been back several times, it can fly .
