I love coffee. At home I am typically a French press guy. In my glory days, I worked at a brewery just a couple block from a place called Olympia Coffee Roasters. During that time, I got used to a very high level of coffee. They had a coffee brewing apparatus called a Clover Machine. Each of their single varietal coffees got it's own steeping time, and temperature. I got treated to some amazing flavors!
During my travels of the world, I have enjoyed some down right shitty coffees. Cheap, pre-ground Italian illy brand coffee brewed in a Moka Pot, and my favorite, Czech style Turecká Káva. It translates to Turkish coffee, but it is not Turkish coffee. I remember drinking it in the majestic city of Český Krumlov and thinking it was really something magical, and special. It literally took me years to learn how to make it. When I did learn, I realised all the magic was the surroundings, and perhaps the euphoria of drinking a few beers... To make it, you take a cheap pre ground coffee like illy, put it in a cup. Boil water, and dump on top, stir with a spoon, and weight about 60-90 seconds. Give it another little stir, and most of the grounds sink to the bottom. The first couple sips will have a lot of "mouth feel" from the coffee dust that refuses to sink. You will enjoy a cup of strong, bitter coffee.
These days, If I am backpacking, I either brew Turecká Káva, or I use the Starbucks instant. I pre way and grind my coffee at home. I use 20 g, ground for a Moka Pot, and I use what-ever brand of "Premium" coffee happens to be in my coffee jar. I may take my Aeropress into the woods, if I actually make it out backpacking this summer. If I am car camping or canoe camping, I have a Stanly boil + brew French press that works great.
If anyone is interested, of course I have a silly YouTube video about Turecká Káva find it here.
