I've been looking at food vacuum sealers today. Got me thinking. BITD when Stouffers had things like Swedish Meatballs frozen in a boil in bag, I'd use those for overnighters or for the first night of a longer trip. Vacuum seal, freeze leftovers and boil the bag at camp. Just a thought.

I've, of recent, done the Tasty Bite product line. Good stuff.

Have done that with omelettes, when I still ate a lot of eggs for breakfast.

done the Tasty Bite product line. Good stuff. Big fan of Tasty Bites over instant rice or rice ramen noodles. Car camping I am a big fan of bags of frozen stir veggies, add a protein and homemade curry paste. I did last year for a friend on a BP trip, with dried coconut cream and fresh ginger and she still raves to friends about it.

I packed my own meals for the field as a Marine officer and one day I made boil-in-bag rice. I dumped a small can of chicken on a plate and covered it in the hot rice. When it was heated up, I put a few rings of pineapple on the rice. I was sitting in my hole eating this when the Colonel came in and asked what I was eating. I told him it was pineapple chicken over rice and joked that it came in the MRE's. Later my Sargent came to me and said the Colonel had him looking through all the MRE's for the pineapple chicken over rice. I had to go fess up and bail out the Sargent.

I have been playing around with freezer bag chicken vindaloo. I have Mountain House FD chicken, some FD potatoes and air dried onions from North Bay Trading, vindaloo dry spice from Whole foods, a little salt, garlic powder as the dry ingredients. They can be packed in a vacuum sealer bag. The last ingredients are some oil, wine vinegar and tomato paste from a tube. The wet ingredients should be relatively stable in even warm weather.
A little complicated but it has been coming out very tasty and has a good spicy zip. I also like I can make the bags to the serving size I want.

Ernie, how would you rate the Mountain House chicken? I was thinking of using it along with rehydrated beans/onions/peppers for a trail burrito.

Sounds good. Ernie, how would you rate the Mountain House chicken? I was thinking of using it along with rehydrated beans/onions/peppers for a trail burrito. You definitely have to fully re hydrate it which is a good ten minutes with boiling water to start. It is still a bit chewy with a somehwat strong chicken meat taste. I find the little chewy actually a good thing because a lot of FD food is so soft. Just like jerky, at least with my system, the meat fiber adds a lot to the feeling of satiation. I would think it would work well in a trail burrito if you are looking for some more meat protein.
Any prepared food like a noodle bowl that has FD chicken in it, they usually tiny and few. Adding come of the MH pieces make like it really is chicken noodles.
