I’m leaving in a few day for a five day backpacking trip. Does anyone know where I could get a small amount of powdered milk. Individual packets would be nice. All I seem to be able to find is very large boxes of it. Far more than I actually need. The excess would probably be wasted.
Thank you.

I've used Nido. If you have any Spanish groceries in Billings, they usually have it, or I'm sure you can order it online. Where are you headed?

I use Nido as well. I used to have to hunt for it or order it online but now I can find it in a medium-sized canister at my regular grocery store and I just put the amount I need for any given trip in ziploc bag(s). You can also find it in individual packets at minimus.biz, but by the time you pay shipping you are better off IMO getting a canister of Nido.

I'll tell you this. Don't try to substitute non-dairy creamer, no matter how many you can grab for free from the coffee house.

Got a date this coming week with the Teton Crest in GTNP. Looking forward to it. First real chance, for a variety of reasons, to get out this summer.

Powdered milk (non-fat or Nido) keeps a very long time in the freezer. Go ahead and get what you can find, take what you need, and seal the rest up and bung it in the freezer for next time.

I have seen supermarket powdered milk (Carnation or whatever) in individual packets that come in a box. I had at one point carried these. The packs are paper on the outside with a foil liner. The paper gets wet and very soft and if the foil is flexed too much tended to get small holes. It is meant for storage on a shelf not the vigors of a food bag.
Your results may differ.

If you have any Spanish groceries in Billings True story: When I worked in Billings back in 2005, we often went to a Mexican restaurant downtown. Billings is so white the cooks and busboys were white.

So out of curiosity, can those of us who are lactose intolerant use powdered milk? Is there such a thing as lactose free powdered milk?

So out of curiosity, can those of us who are lactose intolerant use powdered milk? Is there such a thing as lactose free powdered milk? My wife, lactose intolerant, was unable to use powdered milk. I used soy and almond powdered milk, after finding that regular powdered milk caused her issue. instead.

Our WinCo carries milk powder in bulk so you can just purchase what you need. Sprouts may have it in their bulk bins, as well. In case you have either of those grocery stores near you ...

May not be a problem in the modest quantities one consumes with the oatmeal. If it is, there is powdered almond, coconut, and soy milk (though you might have to hit amazon for those). I find the soy milk tastes icky—like baby formula. Almond or coconut is the way to go.
