Perhaps this is a dead issue for a moment but I'm going to keep an eye on it. If nothing forms, and my time allows (that is an incredibly big IF), I'll plan something, put the information out for somewhere in South/Central PA and we will see. It could be an "If you build it they will come" sort of situation. It is about time I met some people from this site. A few years ago I organized a small meet-up during the winter here in Upstate NY so people could experience some lake effect snow. Maybe I'll do that again this winter.

If you do that I'll make every effort to get there.

walkswithblackflies , if you have another lake effect snow gathering, should we bring tents or should we plan to build an igloo?

should we bring tents or should we plan to build an igloo Tents.... though we could try an igloo depending on snow conditions. Lake effect tends to be dry/powdery, and freeze/thaw cycles can create ice layers between snow layers, so blocks can be hard to create. Usually the best method is to pile snow then dig out a cave, but that takes a lot of time.

My gear is good down to an overnight low of 20 degrees, so I'm doubtful for a winter PG East.

I've had my hammock gear down to 9 degrees, but I hate the weight I carry to meet that threshold. Tent I can do 5 and don't carry quite as much.

I was just barely warm enough to sleep through the night in my hammock at 19 degrees. Any colder I would be more inclined to car camp with a tent and extra gear, and go on dayhikes. I much prefer cool temps over summer, but 20* crosses a line from fun to frosty for me.

I'd be interested, but depending on when it's scheduled would depend on whether I can actually make it. I don't get vacation days, but we get long weekends here and there.

I get 4 weeks vacation per year, and still have 3 weeks left. I will carry over 1 week into next year, which has to be used by the end of March. Late March is the optimal time for me.
I would have used more of the vacation time if not for my shoulder injury June 14 (torn rotator cuff) and surgery Sep 26. Full recovery is 4-6 months, which puts me in good shape for late March.
I scheduled a week off for Dec 7-15, hoping to be fit for some not too strenuous backpacking. My recovery at this point is well ahead of the curve, and I've been doing local dayhikes very carefully (the main thing is I can't risk falling at this point).
Don't have solid plans for that 2nd week in December, other than heading south or southeast from Chicago. Weather will play a factor. I don't mind long drives.

I've camped in it, as I have spent a lot of time winter steelhead fishing in your area. Your about 4 hrs. from the Vt. border, where I live. A snowbelt a half an hour from me sees 4' snowfalls and had 8' on the ground last winter. The problem with LE snows is visitors may not make it home! I drove through the tug last week, I'm sure there's some great areas to explore. Off topic, I was going to ask you about the Siamese Ponds area. My wife and I would attend a gathering, but we're loathe to do more than a day drive. Places like South Fork is pushing 1,000 miles for us. Pennsylvania is doable.

The Time/Distance factor is something we've all had some practice with. It's starting to sound like we need a registered nurse on the trip.

Any good areas for backpacking in the Hoosier state, aside from Charles C Deam? (been there, done that). I have, of course, visited Turkey Run & Shades more than once.

Any place would be entirely new to me, since I haven't been east of the Mississippi since...er...1964 I stopped in a Florida airport for about 30 minutes back in 199X, but I don't think that counts.
