There used to be a group that got together at least once a year in Pennsylvania a few years back. Not an Easterner, but that makes the most sense, being the most central.

I'm sitting here 9 days after shoulder surgery feeling bummed because my arm will be in a sling during October (my favorite month to hike) and the long recovery means no backpacking for me until March. But planning a trip always cheers me up and I will be following this thread for the possibility to finally meet up with some of y'all. Living in Chicagoland I'm a long drive from most of my favorite places to hike, but that never stopped me. Anything under 16 hours is good for me. I've been to Big South Fork many times, and can attest to its quality for great dayhikes and backpacking. Mount Rogers was mentioned. In mid-late June the mountainsides are ablaze in blooming rhododendron. There are many open views of the surrounding mountains, and herds of wild ponies. I've never hiked in Pennsylvania, so that's a tantalizing option for me. Linville Gorge (and the North Carolina mountains) are great. The pic below has a view of the Gorge with yours truly on the summit of Hawksbill. Table Rock and Shortoff mountains are in the distance on the left.

Are we looking for a place to car camp and then day hike from?

I hear good things about Linville Gorge, in N.C., but for this purpose we'd probably prefer a car camp. Table Rock is nice. Yep

There's a group campsite at Big South Fork... I'll second this idea. I've always wanted to hike Big South Fork but it seems that I always answer the call from the woods up north.

Following, it is unlikely I would venture east to the other side of the 100th Meridan for hiking, but I am amped to see the interest in folks on this forums having regional gatherings. I think that it is an activity that would sustain this community.

Big South Fork sounds nice, though if it is during the school year I'm probably a no show.

Based on from what I can determine as to member locations, the following seem like where the most reside: - SF Bay Area - PNW - Rocky Mtns - SW Central - Central Midwest - Central TX - FL/GA/AL - Mid East Coast Could also consider moving the location from PG each year to areas in the above regions. Let the locals show us where they roam. Just thinking out loud.

Nope. Usually a 4 day on the calendar but only a 3 day in reality.

Co is a central location, but “central” isn’t the same as convenient for most people (though I think the Front Range may boast the largest concentration of active, or formerly active, forum members, which I’m guessing is why PG happened there).

Perhaps this is a dead issue for a moment but I'm going to keep an eye on it. If nothing forms, and my time allows (that is an incredibly big IF), I'll plan something, put the information out for somewhere in South/Central PA and we will see. It could be an "If you build it they will come" sort of situation. It is about time I met some people from this site.

OMG
1600 miles to the Allegheny National Forest! 1200 to Linville Gorge! 1000 to Big South Fork!
Can my car make it? Will the wife lend me her Corolla? Can I rent a Prius?
(NOTE TO SELF: NOTHING ever happens without action. Rule #1.)

I'm definitely interested. Those destinations are much closer to my home in Chicagoland than to gabby's abode.
