I just discovered that I have from Sunday to Thursday free in early October. Yay! I will be at a wedding in Santa Cruz on Saturday and then Fleet Week in SF on Friday night so I'm trying to fit a 1 or 2 night loop in Big Sur. Any suggestions?

Sunday to Thursday is good - the weekends get crazy on the popular trails. The most popular trail right now is hiking from Kirk Creek Campground on Hwy 1 to Vicente Flat and taking the Vicente Flat, Cone Peak, Gamboa, and Stone Ridge Trails for a Cone Peak loop. I can't think of another trail into the Ventana from the west side that doesn't currently involve long road walks, legal access issues, or gnarly bushwhacking. Vicente Flat is an over-crowded, trashed-out place along a creek that I would avoid. If you can drive up the road to the Cone Peak Trail (the road isn't always open), then you can do the loop and avoid the Kirk Creek trail part, and plan to camp at Goat Camp, which is great but has a dozen or more people on weekends. My favorite spot in the Ventana is Pine Valley. It is usually accessed from China Camp on the Tassajara Road, which is long and rough. Do some research on www.ventanawild.org/ and bigsurtrailmap.net.
