I don't know about any other option. That road is narrow, as in eye of a needle narrow, so any road work would make it impassible. Seems like the right thing to do is just close it for as long as it takes.

Glacier Point will be a great hiking destination while the road is closed.

Glacier Point will be a great hiking destination while the road is closed. A new Epic Paved Bike Trail on the closed section of road!

I know where I'm going to hike in 2021.
Reds Meadow is due for a facelift soon too. It sure is a lumpy road currently.

A new Epic Paved Bike Trail on the closed section of road! There ya go! Assuming bikes are allowed during construction, that would be a great way to approach that section of Yos.

If only they'd make it permanent and just allow park shuttle buses and non-motorized access. My favorite campground in Yosemite (valley area) is Bridalveil Creek. It would be great if it was only accessible by park shuttle or bikes.

I got a hole in a sidewall on those turns between Washburn and the parking lot at Glacier Point, because a shuttle bus nearly ran me off the road. Flat tire and then a flat doughnut that I had to drive to the gas station at Wawona to air it up and then the samaritan ran me back to the car, for the long drive home going really slow in Sunday night traffic.
It's about time.
