Yes it was time for this senior economic peon to spend some serious dough on outdoor fun once again. After 2.5 years now into retirement, I've managed to live solely on monthly SS benefits without digging into my bank account.
So as a reward this morning at REI, bought these Zamberlan Vioz GTX boots in size 8 (M US) for $305. Have had a lot of heavy duty hiking boots over decades but these are the first from this Italian (Thanks Freestone!...Norwegian) brand. At REI also tried on the Asolo 520 GV's that were $330. Used a black marker on that yellow "VIBRAM" on the toe haha.
Above image with my very worn Asolo TPS 320 GV boots that bought spring 2016. So a bit more than 3 years heavy use on the Asolo's that now have a hole punctured in the left toe leather and wear into the midsole. Walking on Sierra Nevada granite is often like walking on coarse sandpaper and I'm pretty brutal doing so off trail with my crushing pack weight. Earlier this spring also bought a pair of inexpensive HiTec hiking boots for $50 at big 5 SG that I'll only wear day hiking in order not wear the Zamberlan soles down so rapidly.
Just returned Saturday from a 6 day backpack into Desolation W and had planned to be right back out into the John Muir W this week but haven't felt motivated enough as I hate the long boring drive. So instead will continue processing images from the Deso trip. August 18 have a date at The Rolling Stones concert and after that expected to go over Shepherd Pass, a most strenuous 6.6k climb, on a 10 day trip but have doubts my easily sore right foot is up to it. At least boots won't be an excuse. Tomorrow is another fun day "hiking" the hilly streets of San Francisco's touristy north shore.

I believe Zamberlan are Italian? Yes Italian, and these fit my feet like a glove. Absolutely love these boots. Yes they are GTX lined, a bit warm in the summer but I don't mind. Great in cool season hikes. Word of advise - only use their Hydrobloc leather treatment. It works really well.
Some people have had issues with a bit of slippage in heel of the right boot. It went away after I fully broke them in. Taped my heel in advance for while but don't need to now.
I just bought a pair of the upgraded ones, and will finish breaking them on a 4 dayer this weekend in WV.

davesenesac @va3pinner My Asolo TPS 320 GV failed on a short hike the other day. The whooshy-cushy layer between the leather and Vibram sole deteriorated and separated. Am ready to move on from Asolo. Tried on several pairs of Zamberlan Vioz GTX and really liked the feel. Did notice minor right boot heel slippage mentioned above. The slippage was hardly noticeable and a thank you for the "It's OK after breakage comment." It's been a year since your posts. What is your follow-on assessment of the Zamberlan Vioz GTX.

I get left heel slippage with my Vioz. Upper left side of my left heel. Even after 6 trips ( roughly 30-35 miles ) still can't get them to not slip. It takes longer for them to slip, but slip none the less. Very frustrating. The worst part is they feel so good on my feet.

It takes longer for them to slip, but slip none the less. Very frustrating. This was my experience with every boot I've ever tried. Which is why I don't use boots any more. I'm not trying to turn this conversation into a shoe vs. boot thing because I wish I could wear boots. So those who can... more power to you.

Well after 4 backpacking trips now of 30 days and another 10 day hiking, holding up well. Most comfortable heavy duty boots I've worn. Very secure on rock and note I often practice friction climbing up and down max steep rock. Toe has worn that is more about my brutal off trail rambling. Will apply some E6000 glue.

After reviewing specs and davesenesac photo of leather wear on toe, switched thoughts from Zamberlan Vioz GTX (Hydrobloc Nabuk Leather) to Zamberlan Vioz GTX RR (Full Grained w/rubber toe band). Went back to REI again and spent an hour switching back and forth between GTX size 8 and 8.5 using various insole sock combinations to ascertain Zamberlan fit. Finally decided on size 8, but still a dash of doubt. Both on Zamberlan models on sale Backcountry.com at great pricing. Because of the lingering heel issue, abruptly went, without trying on, with the good old fashioned, out of production, Merrell Wilderness. They made a brief production run mid-teens. Merrell sizing has always been good to me and the price from, can you believe it.....Nordstrom Rack (HauteLook) was $239. One tipping point factor, beside same price range and hope for a typical Merrell fit was weight, all three were c. 3.5 lbs. Spending way too much time on this.......but that's what I do. The jury still out pending receipt. To be continued.
