I do, too. My first experience with any kind of bees was ground-nesting yellow jackets.

Maybe something like this? I watched these for a bit. They actually seem to be guarding the entrance. When I first saw this I thought it was a fallen nest from a tree so I started to try and pick it up and quickly found my presence wasn't desired. After a quick self-preserving mad dash. I came back to investigate.

I've had a few close calls with freshly-built nests while mowing the lawn.

Maybe something like this? Interesting. Usually there is nothing but a tiny hole in the dirt that they go in and out of. Maybe that next ran into a subsurface obstacle and now they're building it up out of the ground.
