My 8yo daughter and I are planning our first backpacking trip this weekend. She’s excited about it. We’re experienced car campers. I don’t know how well this is going to go so I’d like to find a trail with good camping about a mile in. My thinking is, if my daughter (or I!)get spooked, we could head back to the car with flashlights and go home.
Anybody know of a suitable trail within an hour or so of north Atlanta?
So far, I’m considering the Dawson Forest WMA City of Atlanta Tract.

Welcome, jrein. I can’t help with Georgia trails, but will recommend that you look over the pinned post at the top of the Hiking with Kids forum.

I’m considering the Dawson Forest WMA City of Atlanta Tract. Looks nice. Several of the state parks have backcountry sites (listed under the Camping section on Ga State Parks.)

Thanks for the responses. I dropped by REI today. One of the folks there suggested Raven Cliff Falls. Looks great. That’s the plan for now.
