markskor would have some idea. At an estimate from past years ot similar timings in the snowmelt cycle? Relatively abundant. Getting away from leafy green vegetation and water will help. As would getting to a site exposed to wind (sorry, I can’t remember where the backpackers site is I passs that on my way out from the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne/White Wolf so I get intent on that Tuolumne Grill/Tioga Pass Resort first meal out ). Earlier downstream in the trees the bugs get bad. I’d say it’s the usual early season: head net, your repellabt of choice in stick and lotion and a full tent or inner nest so you’re far enough away from the mesh they can’t reach you. A week back Yosemite posted these photos: all that stuff melting heads downstream..,

Thank-you HSF. I have a wilderness permit for the 19th. I am thinking of not going until early August. I don't like the thought of hiking and setting up a tent in the mud and coping with mosquitoes. I was going to camp past Glen Aulin and head up to Miller Lake, then make my way to Smedberg Lake. The hoards of mosquitoes can drive a person mad.

Nice route. Early season does have the best water features. Heading to Sonora Pass? A good season to take a self standing tent and setting up on granite slabs.
I’m looking at traversing Ten Lakes Basin from White Wolf. But late August/September.
ETA: Trip #36 in Schaffer’s Complete Hiker’s Guide has more information.

I have enjoyed 10 lakes. I had planned on my next trip, next year to stay at the far left lake above the lake at the base of the trail. That is a good area for just kicking back after a swim and watch the stars.

Does anyone know how bad the mosquitoes are near Glen Aulin? On a quick one-day trip back home to Mammoth from TM. Life is grand up in the Meadows...day temps in the 70's...night time tickling freezing. However, the mosquitoes are terrible, but that how it goes...living the dream!
