Trespassing Across America By all means, read it. Great book. I've got to get a hold of Walden on Wheels.
I know all of Michener's books are long but I just devour them and am always disappointed when they come to an end. I've read every one and some twice.

I think I read one Michener novel back in my undergrad days. I was unimpressed, though that might in part have been because I had to read it for some class. But I thought his writing was a bit loose and untidy. Maybe I’m just not the “sweeping saga” type. I don’t like getting involved with characters only to have them disappear as we move on a generation or whatever.

I guess the one set in my recently old state (Maryland) is The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler. Pulitzer Prize winner. Anything by Anne Tyler is great so I have been told. For my current state ( West Virginia) I will say the biography of the late governor Arch Moore: The Life Of Governor Arch A. Moore Jr. He was a prominent figure in West Virginia politics from the late 50's to the late 80's.

It's different from his later works, and very evocative of the places.

13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey by Kathryn Tucker Windham and Margaret Gillis Figh (not so much a novel, but a collection of folklore) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee My Southern Journey by Rick Bragg
Forrest Gump (the novel by Winston Groom) is on my list to read as it's quite different from the movie version.

I don't know what book is the best, but please don't ever start a conversation with a Kansan about this book... Been there, done that.

The movie is better than the book, but Kansans should sue for slander...Kansas is in black and white, while Oz is in color. Anyone who has been to or lived in the Flint Hills, knows better. (I spent a number of years camping with the Scouts in SE Kansas near Sedan and taught one year in Longton on the eastern edge of the Flint Hills.)
