No experience with it. The Patagonia Down Sweater costs over $100 less and looks like it has more 800 fill down. I don't know if it's the weight as your priority. For me, it's all about the warmth when it comes to my insulation layers (although I will always choose Down...for now).

I'm with Tigger. It seems they're charging an awful lot for very little fill. I've found smaller baffles to be less warm on top of that, as the seams leak air and have no insulation. I would want something warmer, but it depends on the conditions you're planning on camping in. I've been using a Montbell Jacket. A few ounces heavier, but significantly warmer. www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?p_id=2301176If you plan to layering up anyway, you might be ok. It certainly is a light weight option. I prefer to wear just my down jacket with a shirt underneath, personally. I don't like to feel restricted by wearing layer over layer. That being said, I've saw the jacket used around a lot around town, but never in the woods and never in particularly cold weather.

The Patagonia Down Sweater costs over $100 less I agree that's a pretty steep price but I'm not paying anywhere close to that amount. My son knows a guy. You know how it goes. Thanks for the comments. If I get it, I'll have to post a performance report.

If you have read any of my JMT stories under the trip report section you would have been introduced to my JMT friend Todd. Todd had one of these on the JMT this summer. I looked it over closely- very fine garment. Todd loved his. And I think anything MH makes is top quality. I don't think you will be disappointed if got one.

My son knows a guy. You know how it goes. I am wondering how far that "my son knows a guy" relationship goes. Like I was thinking, I know you, you know your son, and your son knows this guy.... If you get my drift.

I've had a WM Flash Jacket for the past 3 yrs, and It's been one of the best pieces of outdoor clothing I've owned. About the same price-Can your son's friend get one of those?

In answer to both the above questions, my son's friend's wife has some king of angle with a MH dealer and once a year she can get deals for him. Just a few items for immediate friends and family No connection with Western Mountaineering, sadly. They make great stuff.

I use the Patagonia down sweater for every day winter wear, skiing and ski touring as an outer layer or mid-layer on very cold days. If I were delegated to a single down jacket, the Patagonia Down Sweater would be the choice. Off-season purchase pricing is attractive.
We were seeking a specialized light-weight, super compressible down jacket for backpacking. The intended application was for use early morning/evening and as a super warmth, lightweight back-up system for extended multi-day backcountry use.
There were only (2) we considered. The MH Ghost Whisperer and the WM Quick Flash. The Quick Flash had 850 fill and no pocket zippers (potential tears)which we liked. Ultimately, we had the opportunity to try them both for a fit comparison. The WM Quick Flash prevailed.
The Ghost Whisper is beloved by those who have them and pretty much as good as it gets. Definitely uptown. Tough choice. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

I know Montbell makes excellent gear but even at those prices, which really are good, the deal I got is better. Beside the MH I'm getting has a hood, something I really wanted. But thanks for the comments.
Do you miss Bozeman? Great place if it wasn't so pricey. BTW, it's where my son lives.

There is no place like MT.

what is the difference between the down sweater and down jackets? Marketing departments? Maybe with Patagonia, sweater sounds more comfortable and targets a larger commercial user segment.
