But this reminds me of how I grew up skiing - jeans with pantyhose underneath for warmth! That made me chuckle. I started skiing in blue jeans theat had been Scotch Guarded. I moved on to bib Carhartts. The Carhartts lasted much longer between Scotch Guard applications before wetting out. Of corse we eventually started waxing our Carhartts. Anyway, I also used pantyhose for extra warmth. It was strange introducing my ski buddies to that. I learned it from my father who as a lineman used pantyhose in the cold of winter for warmth. Rumi

The other problem with hiking with jeans is that they make you look fat

If you want to look legit with a BAK strapped to your leg you'd better be wearing jeans and not synthetic.

Interesting that pantyhose were worn. But then, they were hot, and as one co-worker put it, like being sealed in synthetics...something like that.
I used to wear dancers' leg warmers either under or over sweat pants, usually underneath on ordinary cold days and when walking, but over sweatpants on frigid days when just show shoveling.

Here is a true story. I haven't worn pair of jeans since August 1981. After getting out of the Army the previous April and managing a restaurant for eight months I decided to go to school and enrolled at the local community college. It was first week of classes and the instructor was late for the chemistry lab so all of us students were waiting outside in the hall for him to get there. I didn't know anyone and so was just waiting like everybody else. What I noticed was that every one of us were wearing bluejeans. When the instructor there even he was wearing jeans. For some reason, this struct me as a little odd and was on my mind for the rest of the day. Being the contrarian that I am, I decided that day that I was not going to wear jeans ever again. I haven't since. Another quick example of how I tend to not go with the flow was in high school in North Carolina. (A tobacco state where there were smoking patios outside of classrooms.) Everyone smoked. Being the rebel that I am, I decided that I would not start smoking. It was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. Quoted the whole post because the Jean Rebellion bears repeating. I'm 49 and swore off jeans in my mid 30s. The appeal wore off for me---other pants always seem like better options for any given situation---particularly hiking.

That’s crazy. I’d only wear True Religion straight legs for that hike.

Back in the 1970s and '80s I frequently wore blue jeans or Army BDUs for backpacking because I was dirt poor and needed something cheap and tough. Here's a pic from the AT many decades ago---

I don't even like to hike in long pants - shorts, skort or if I must, capri pants. But this reminds me of how I grew up skiing - jeans with pantyhose underneath for warmth! He still skis in Levi's...well at least during summer playtime. Laurel Creek backpack 8/4/2017:

What I noticed was that every one of us were wearing bluejeans. When I was at Prescott College (Northern AZ) the uniform was 501's, big Mac Flannel or cotton chamois, big leather mountain boot, down vest and a Buck folding knife. (circa 1970-1975)

Given how heavy and hot jeans are during the summer I wouldn't consider them. I am guilty of wearing jeans numerous times during my winter camping days to include the 'daks. Despite cotton being an automatic death sentence I somehow survived.

I wonder how many of us fall in that category. A number of us, I would guess, depending on what the definition of hippie is. All I know is I miss my bell bottom jeans. This needs a sound track. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCa4Hj_czYA

I wear leggings otherwise now.
Hate hiking pants.
