Now into my 8th decade, senior health issues seem to be increasingly plaguing me. Fortunately I rarely get head colds much less influenza. The first bout was few years ago when I developed a nasty case of Shingles but that cleared up thanks to several bottles of antibiotics.
But last fall after lots of backpacking and hiking developed first ever serious foot problem beyond common sore feet, plantar fascitis in my right foot that was slow to heal. For a month, had a special insert with a hole cut out at the heal in my boots.
Then during the peak of the ski season when my mogul skiing was getting amazing, developed acute diverticulitis. Developed over decades dealing with an old medical issue. That was also during 3 week long road trips to Southwest desert wildflower blooms. Some really unpleasant ghastly antibiotics knocked that off that would likely have put any of our ancestors in the grave, thus thanks for modern medical science. Need to change my diet in the future for no binging on excessive hard or greasy foods.
But now back home of all places, Wednesday strained my left wrist badly after opening a gallon sized Ocean Spray red grapefruit plastic bottle cap, so this next week is cold packs and Ibuprofen. Was very painful for a couple days wrapped up in an immobilizing elastic bandage. Thus will be buying a jar opener for first time ever and am herein advising other older folks to preemptively do likewise for that and other known issues due to weakening body structures especially at joints before they do their damage that in some cases will never be the same again causing a permanent loss of lifestyle.
Oh yeah...a couple weeks ago while hiking downtown San Francisco streets, went out without a hat on a cool partly cloudy day, and because my hair on top is thinning some, got a wee bit too much sun, so will be increasingly wearing hats outdoors haha.

Yes, sir. Time marches on, but it makes it more difficult on us mere mortals.Sorry to hear of your many medical issues, but it seems you have them under control for now. Strained your wrist opening a jar, you say? So far, that hasn't been a problem around here, but I am only 67, so a few years behind you. I have several large pairs of channel locks that will do nicely for some of that. Maybe I'll break out the strap wrench for the larger jars.

"Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."
I encourage anyone feeling old to read, carefully, phrase by phrase, "Ulysses" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. This is the ultimate statement of purpose by a senior. His wife is old, his son is boringly governing the territories, so Ulysses summons his old companions and they take off on an adventure at their own pace! One of my favorite pieces of literature!
"How dull it is to pause, to rust, unburnished and not to shine in use, as though to breathe were life"

Now 4 months later after 4 backpacking trips am much improved so an update. Right foot plantar fascitis seems to have fully healed in part due to purchasing a new pair of heavy duty hiking boots. Diverticulitis also healed though seems to have left me with a direct inguinal hernia I am now sometimes wearing a truss for during athletic activity like backpacking. Wrist seems well too though will continue to be careful stressing it. And my dome is so tan now that I don't need to worry about sunburn if just out an hour or two. Another pain thin me had not mentioned is soreness on the side of my right femur joint when laying or sleeping on my right side seems to have gotten better after bothering me the last few years.
After my epic 9-day effort over notorious Shepherd Pass, a 6370 foot climb over the Sierra Crest, feel stronger than I've felt in several years that bodes well if snows come early this November and our Tahoe ski season gets going. Importantly for any senior, I suspect the strenuous backpacking effort carrying 60# has a beneficial effect on internal visceral areas because it puts many organs in a rebuilding mode.

At 73 now, I find a lot of things I changed. First off, I, for the most part, eliminated fried foods from my diet. Hiking trails here is down to wandering around and taking in nature. Being a recluse, having someone to hike with is non existent so I have to be extra careful as well. A lot of my exercise, especially during winter months, I hate winter, is little more then wearing my pack around the house in order to keep in shape. I do have COPD, as well as back issues, but I must keep pushing on. as it's said, If you don't use it, you will lose it.

Entering this stage, the exercise does get tough. But there are still some sports suitable for the elderly to make us healthier. charlotteyy Your post has been edited by Mods. Both of those links were ads for fitness watches. While they contained some additional information, the ads violated forum guidelines.
The relevant info was drink plenty of water while exercising, don’t exercise within 3 hours of bedtime as it interferes with the bodies manufacturing of melatonin, and walking is a good way to exercise.
