Did anyone take note of how long it's been since the last murder on the AT?

We're going to spend a fair amount of time with our families and friends explaining why it is not dangerous to go backpacking... I would be interested to hear if anyone has a conversation with someone about the safety of the trail particularly triggered by this event. I'm going by people who are already carrying, chatting up more people asking questions on a popular FB site . I had a conversation in an outdoor store last night. Thousands will take place. How could they not?

A conversation about this incident, I can see. What I doubt happens very often is a further discussion of the dangers of hiking, relating to human violence against hikers. I just can't see the validity of worrying over some random act of violence.

I have no experience with the AT but used to pay a lot of attention to it through Trailjournals and Whiteblaze. Given the amount of usage and proximity to urban cities, on the whole I would consider it pretty safe.
If I ever feel a need to carry anything other than bear spray, I'll just go somewhere else.
ETA: I quit hiking in the SoCal San Gabriel's and San Bernardino's when the risk of vehicle break ins and unsavory characters encountered within a few miles of the trailheads went over my threshold for risk mitigation.

Did anyone take note of how long it's been since the last murder on the AT? I haven't been there in a couple of years. Honest!

I just can't see the validity of worrying over some random act of violence. Agree. Random acts of violence can happen anywhere, anytime. One can't protect themselves from crazy. Nor should one hide from the world. As said before, it's about risk assessment and mitigation. ETA: Well, one can carry a gun. But is that misguided confidence? That is not a fear I want to carry into the wilderness. Bear spray is as far as I'll go.

I guess everyone saw that James Jordan was (again) declared unfit for trial via insanity.
Once a judge considers him "re-habilitated" does he then face trial, or is he released?
