As it were, I happen to find myself in Michigan after hiking the Pennsylvania AT and basically anything with elevation out there. After literally three months of B2B sections and a few “though hikes” (20+m a day x weeks), I’ve found I got pretty good at it. Now I’m in Michigan and other than distance I haven’t located anything really challenging or technical. Nothing wrong with that (Florida was flat too) but I’m just asking if anyone local to MI know of any challenging trails I should check out. This isn’t a question that will result in “that wasn’t hard, next?” at all. There’s always something awesome about every state I visit. Suggestions?

Porcupine Mountains State Park, the High Country Pathway, and Isle Royale are the most "challenging" I can think of and they aren't that difficult. But the first ferry to Isle Royale from Copper Harbor is not until May 13. And I'm not sure if the Porkies are open yet. The North Country Trail provides distance if you want a long hike but it's fairly easy hiking. Two nice but short trails in the lower peninsula are the Jordan River Pathway and the NCT-Manistee River Trail loop but I don't know if the Red Bridge across the river is now open (it was closed for construction last summer.) And in the UP, Pictured Rocks is nice but, again, don't know if that is open yet. Edit: And if you're going to be in Michigan around Memorial Day, that's when I'm moving my sailboat from Bay City to Traverse City. I'd be glad to take you as crew (and my wife would be glad to skip the trip). It's generally cool and involves a lot of motoring but you'd get to see the northern part of the lower peninsula from the water.

Had to delete my last post as my timeframe may have changed. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll check them out. May still be able to help with the boat. I’ll be bringing another boat back the way you’re going so some familiarity with the area would be awesome.

Weather permitting, we plan to depart Bay City on May 29 or 30. If you find you're available and still interested, PM me. Short notice is fine. We have been making this trip to and from TC for years so my wife will be okay with being replaced at the last minute.
