What exercises are there to strengthen the knees and to maintain or increase knee flexability?

I focus on strengthening all the legs muscles with weights with a particular emphasis for protecting the knees on those that tie in to the knee. This means for me most importantly the small teardrop shaped part of the quad that ties into the knee and is best isolated and strengthened with seated leg extensions with a light to moderate weight focusing on holding the extension. For flexibility of the leg muscles overall I like stiff-leg dead lifts with a light weight and good stretch(targeting both the back and legs) as a warm up for more heavy bent leg(romanian)dead lifts which is more a compound strength exercise targeting the hamstrings.I also like to regularly take each leg through its full range of motion seated or on one leg to work out all cracks and pops etc. that seem to be a natural result of the aging process.I am sure others can give you advice on yoga or other moves for flexibility but honestly flexibility has never been one of my strengths.
And of course regularly hiking/backpacking is going to help strengthen and tone the specific muscles used while backpacking so critical to taking stress off the knees while backpacking.

Personally, I like the Side Angle pose and the Triangle pose, but here are a few others. Yoga for the knees

Last week, I used a 20 pound weighted vest on a Versa Climber. After I was done, I felt I might want to do more knee work. Thanks zeke and rwtb123 for your input.
