Apropos to this thread, we just visited Puerto Varas where Thompkins began creating his massive wilderness reserve in Chile. Very fun to hear our local guide talk about how much they distrusted him at first...and now revere him.

We got a similar sort of story about Patagonia National Park. He did a lot of things right—including employing the locals, and selling off the livestock slowly so as not to crash the market.
