On the AT, sometimes you get an assist. I believe this was in the Mahoosuc Range in Maine. And sometimes you don't. Either the Mahoosucs or the White Mountains in NH. The ridge up to the tableland of Katahdin in Maine.

Lovely idea to make this thread! Brings out quite some nice memories, at least for us, some of the strongest memories happen when you are hiking off trail and meet a steep slope that you need to somehow navigate to get through. The relieve when it finally is behind you! French Pyrenees, getting down from the peak of Canigou, north side. Wales, Snowdonia national park. Up the north ridge of Tryfan. It was just the matter of trying to find any spot where you could get higher up, until you met the peak. Fun! Scotland, Isle of Skye. The at times near vertical ridge leading to the peak of Grabh-bheinn. Nothing but loose rocks and boulders. It was one thing to get up to the peak. Finding the descending route was a completely different matter.

Finding the descending route was a completely different matter. Yeah, I’m always careful to pay attention to whether I can down-climb what I’m going up. There’s the issue of it just being harder to go down than up, and then there’s the issue of making sure you don’t start off wrong—a little error leaving the summit and you can end up miles away from where you want to be!

Not near as steep as some of the previous posts but this was in the Superstition Mountains and it was my first time of a real hike in any of kind of mountain so it was steep to me as a flatlander. I was sucking air a lot of the time but one of the best hikes I've ever been on thanks to RedDoug
