Macro route finding is relatively straightforward but the micro route finding can be quite complex as noted above. Yep. What you're referring to as "macro route-finding," I usually call "navigation": knowing where I am now, knowing where I want to go, knowing what direction to travel to get there, etc. As you say, on the Beartooth plateaus or other open alpine areas, this part of the equation is often quite simple. I've gone whole days off-trail above treeline without even taking the map and compass out of my pocket. (That's not a recommended practice, of course.) What you're calling "micro route-finding" is what I generally mean by the term "route-finding": OK, I know where I am, and I know where I need to go, but how on earth am I actually going to accomplish that.
