Almost all my backpacking is in Grizzly country here in MT... I find a good "hang" the best way to deal with the reality of bears. What's your strategy at alpine camps or camps with only scrubby little trees? (I usually just get the best hang I can don't worry about it.) I've occasionally slung a rope over a big boulder or something. An animal could probably get to it if they were highly motivated to do so, but I'd at least make them work for it.

In high alpine the only thing I worry about are Marmots... just getting food up one of those scrubby little trees is sufficient I've found.

Can't answer for bradmacmt, but that's why I carry a can. Bearikades are expensive and bulky, but very light. Worth the money to me for the security. Then again, rarely hike in griz country. Big boulders or cliffs can work. Find a stick that fits a crack around ten feet or so up and hook your food on it. Bears can pull on ropes. In Yosemite bears have been found 30' off the ground on 5.7 terrain going after haul bags.
