But to my scent sensors, the is not much more revolting than a used Mountain House FD dinner pouch at day three in the garbage sack in the summer heat. I would put up against an open tin of anchovies. What about a empty anchovie tin on day three in the hot weather?

Ok, maybe I am reaching, but a good camper would triple rinse the can and put the by product......... point taken. All food smells like food to a bear or most varmits. Proper food handling is a given, Actually I worry more about the smell on me. That's something I have to bring into the tent. My wife went through a thing during her pregnancy where she wanted sardines all the time. It is so easy to get on you but very hard to get off.

Okay, I tried this one on our recent Milford Track tramp. We had 3 pretty much omnivores and Eldest Son, who has food issues up the wazzoo and doesn’t really like fish.
So you know who was the only one who liked the kippers well enough to finish the can? Yup. Mister Food Issues. The rest of us decided that if we were going to have smoked fish, it would be salmon.

Thanks for this thread. I've been reminded that I have enjoyed sardines and kippered snacks in the past. This year we plan on a number of weekend warrior trips, as part of the workup to my wife's solo trip. When I remembered how much I like to eat the kippered and sardines on crackers, I decided to order a batch of kippers and sardines. The yummie tummie of crushing up a cracker into the remaining oils and smacking away has me looking forward to the experience sitting on a spot with a great view. Not something I'd bring on a 9 day trip but for sure a weekend warrior trip.

And in a pinch, they can be used in lieu of a big-ass knife, capable of cutting down the mightiest tree in the forest.

A little follow-up. A couple of days ago I was at Trader Joes in Tulsa and checked out the canned fish. They have Trader Joe brand smoked sardines. Most sardines are pretty good anyway, but the smoked part was interesting. The price was $1.69. They were very good. Not quite as tasty as smoked kippers, but well worth having a few cans in the pantry for snacks. Now I have another flavor to add to my fish rotation.

I had to laugh out loud at this one rebeccad ! Yeah, sometimes I’m just left shaking my head. The thing is, his issues come from his Aspergers and have more to do with textures and other things than with taste—I mean, he loves nut butters, but can’t stand to eat nuts. So second-guessing him is pretty much impossible, except about veggies (non-starters almost 100%).

have more to do with textures and other things than with taste I totally understand this. Food textures aren't as much a problem for me, but let's talk about fabric and clothing fit ...

I’m all over that. I get worse every year. I figure in the end I’ll just be wearing a muumuu, because I won’t be able to stand anything touching me!

tins of fish and Mexican saltines Used to be my "goto" food item while watching NBA games in the back bedroom, where I was sent with my "sardines in mustard" or kippers. It's my dad's fault: he started me at an early age on "brains and eggs" and "kidney stew".

Aren't they very salty? Sort of like anchovies?
