This thread is the best page turner I've read all year!! I'm surprised the moderator's haven't shut this down. danny, from one Louisiana resident to another, please stop! You're giving the State a bad name and a poor impression of its resident's literacy. At this point, you're probably just having fun or replying because of some principle, but you're not doing yourself any favors by continuing this conversation. Clearly, your points of view don't match those of this forum. It's okay to agree to disagree, but there's no need to insult people. Fyi, I'm not a democrat or liberal, was never a Boy Scout, but do like guns and knives. I hunt and fish, and have my conceal and carry permit, too. I own those military grade assault weapons the news talks so harshly about, but I would never take those on a hiking trip. There's a place for everything and this is not the place to discuss survival tactics and or defensive weapons. This is the "Gear Thread" of a hiking forum and it's okay to discuss what type of knife you like and why you like it, FOR HIKING. People should respect your opinion and you theirs. If someone wants to take a Swiss army knife to battle, let them! I'm sorry you've have bad luck in the outdoors. I know the swamps down here and that's not a place I would want to be lost in at night. With your experience, I can see where you may want to be prepared for anything when entering that specific element. But it's not the same element as the National Parks where people on here go hiking. Have you hiked in places like the Sawtooths, Yosemite, Yellowstone or Glacier National Park? If you haven't, you don't understand the kit a hiker in the mountains is bringing. Survival isn't overlooked, but careful planning has you starting and ending at a specific point and hopefully, at a specific time. You pack your pack for the planned trip. I get it, "what if"? This isn't the "what if" thread, this is the gear thread. Your "what if" scenario portends survival tactics and this isn't the thread for that. That's why you're getting push back. We can "what if" all day on any topic. I've hiked with Veterans, and they come prepared! That's their prerogative. If you want to carry the weight of a "big, bad ass knife", go right ahead. Personally, I bring a small folding saw (keeps my boys busy around camp) and a Benchmade folder that has part straight, part serrated edge. It clips comfortably in my pocket and I don't notice it's there or feel slowed by it's heavy, G10 scales. I just like having it. I've taken my two boys on multiple hiking trips into Grizzly country and they always ask if I'm bringing a gun. Same answer every time, NO. I've seen bears on every trip, and I'm here today to write about it. Best of luck in your endeavors. Geaux hiking!!

If anyone wishes, they can click on a member's name and see the profile. If the member set up the email as public, it will be in the profile. Once an account is deleted, no profile will exist. In this case, he was banned, but not deleted, yet.

Good move, but did he ever say why he goes into the woods in the first place? Only goes out five miles, needs a big ass knife, wants to know about AK-47's in the woods, tries to be stealthy, gets lost for 2 days wondering in the woods, violent mood swings. I bet his product is quite good and he sampled a bit too much and it is not a pot farm.

Could be the poster child for thorough background checks... We need Big Brother to comprehensively track everybody's online activity with algorithms that identify the unhinged posts of potential psycho stabbers with big ass knives who might escalate to gunpowder projectiles.

Danny, there is a compass technique that I have used successfully in situations such as your terrain. It is called aiming off. That's my tried and true method.

I usually have a foldable knife with about a 3" blade in my pack. But after this thread I think I'm going to get a machete. I can use it as a sundial, maybe act like a pirate.

Danny, there is a compass technique that I have used successfully in situations such as your terrain. It is called aiming off. Pay attention on the way in and observe your compass. On the way out use the “aiming off” technique. It works. You got me to thinking about how I would explain it. A quick google search turned up this excellent explanation. Thanks for the kind words. danny may have been beyond help! There are some inbreed, coon-asses down here that shouldn’t be allowed to reproduce! Lol. However, I would love to get a few beers in him and listen to his views on politics and religion. I’m sure it would be enlightening.

swiftdream I, also, ask myself how did I present and represent to help the kid move towards the cliff. I am coming to terms with my errors.
