Of all my down it is the backpacking jackets that I wear the most that have to be washed the most. I have no table to sit up to so when eating it is amazing how often I slop the soup, etc. down my chest. I’ve taken to just throwing my much more easily wash Houdini over the jacket in cold and calling that my dinner jacket. Keep it clean, wash it less often but time in general seems to get thing dirty with my usage.

One area in which jackets differ from sleeping bags Sleeping bags get soiled just from sleeping in them. I've never needed to wash a parka. And agreed, if there are internal baffles washing and drying requires much more care. It appears the parka Magnus B. purchased has sewn through baffles.

I've never needed to wash a parka. Well, I have 90-100 days a year where down is my everyday outerwear.
ETA: For example, my main jacket picks up a lot of grime and salt from brushing up against the car while cleaning off snow in the winter.

Well, I have 90-100 days a year where down is my everyday outerwear. Yeah, My down gear doesn't see that much use. In the city use fleece and a shell. Save the down for the mountains. Ha! The further up I go the more I go down! (couldn't resist)

Save the down for the mountains. The two down jackets I use for backpacking (one UL, one much warmer) don't get used for anything else and have never been washed. Others vary. I miss my old Snow Lion parka that kicked the bucket after over 30 years. I still have the hood, which probably has more down in it than my UL jacket. The Snow Lion's replacement is over 10 years old now and starting to show some wear.

I remember them. Still have one of their down vests. They made great stuff in their early years but eventually ran into some real quality control issues, if I remember correctly, which I imagine lead to their demise. Thanks for the memories.

I’ll toss in here that I have washed our down jackets more than once, using the same approach as for a sleeping bag—large front-loader, down soap, gentle spin, then in the dryer on low, breaking up the clumps (they’ve moved away from the recommendation to dry with a tennis ball, I think. I just check it regularly and as it starts to re-fluff make sure we don’t have clumps). Eldest Son wears his down puffy pretty much all the time during the winter in CO Springs, so it has to be washed every time he comes home, and it seems to be handling that treatment just fine.
The original question has been resolved, but I have to say that unless space (bulk) is a huge issue (as it was for us coming to NZ), I’d just go with a fleece jacket. I very nearly did that for here, as they are the most resistant to getting wet and also most durable in some ways. I ended up bringing Second Son’s synthetic jacket (which he outgrew anyway) rather than my down puff, but that’s mostly because his jacket has a hood, and mine doesn’t.

Coolkat, Great balance of price and weight/function! My down puff is upwards of 11 oz, so it’s not that much worse, and for $40!

Interesting. I’d like to see one in person before I bought. Very affordable. Happy Trails, DR

I almost bought one of these. EE has a great reputation. What size jacket do you wear, Trinity? I might be able to help you out with a similar jacket. Happy Trails, DR

Thank you, downriver , that is very kind of you. Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), EE is having a 20% off sale, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Torrid a few days ago....
