i second that fast route-----go on 40 and hit the parkway near newport, take that til it ends and make a left and that will put you in the cosby area.....
i can imagine that the traffic through the park on a holiday weekend will be a nightmare.....
it could take hours to go that way.....
coming from franklin----the drive to maggies valley is still scenic.........and it wont be busy down there at all........
and from franklin----you can just hop on the smoky mountain expressway and go over to waynesville and hop on 40 that way, and basically bypass maggie valley all together.........

Thanks for confirming what I thought. Won't be in a huge hurry, so I guess we'll make a game day decision in regards to skipping Maggie Valley.
Wasn't my first choice to camp in the national park on a holiday weekend, but at least Cosby is tucked out of the way!

Van, it should be noted that the drive from Cherokee to Gatlinburg is pretty fabulous if you aren't in a hurry. There's also the road between catalooche and big creek that goes up and over mt sterling gap.

yeah.....
if you want a scenic route, without a whole ton of traffic (although it has picked up over the last years with the elk introduction)----take that road from cataloochee over to big creek....
very scenic......
it is a dirt/gravel road though, and you cant haul ass on it..........but its a great way to see a remote part of the park...
and you can either get off at big creek and shoot over to the interstate to take you into cosby........
or continue on the road----which becomes paved----over to cosby..........
just plan on plenty of time....
