I've seen a lot of advice to carry a few feet of duct tape, either rolled onto itself or around a trekking pole. I have tried to do things with duct tape in the past, and I've found that if something is just a little wet, or gets wet, the tape simply won't stick. I'm wondering if anyone has tried gaffer's tape, or if it is basically the same as duct tape but with a black matte coating? Are there other kinds of tape that work better still?
I wonder if the suggestion to carry duct tape is simply because it's something you already likely have and buying a whole roll just to have a few feet in your pack is a bit wasteful.

Gaffer take won't leave a sticky residue like duct tape. Comes in a variety of widths and colors, usually black.

Gaffer take won't leave a sticky residue like duct tape. Yes, that's it's most important characteristic, along with removeability. It lacks the powerful adhesion desired for emergency backcountry repairs. On the Four Pass Loop, no_granola's aging pack ripped pretty badly on the first day. Keeping it together for three more days took a lot of duct tape, and I wouldn't have wanted anything less. buying a whole roll just to have a few feet in your pack is a bit wasteful. Many outfitters sell shorter lengths for backpackers. It's way overpriced per unit area, but convenient and less wasteful.

I've not had duct tape be as effective when it has been re-rolled. Through research, I have found out that duct tape is put onto the roll with a certain pressure that keeps duct tape 'fresh' and that's the reason that re-rolled duct tape is not as effective.
I have bought and used, whiles out backpacking, mini-rolls of duct tape and the mini rolls do keep their effective holding power when used.
Over all my experience with duct tape and its ability to survive in a backpacking situation to have been somewhat lacking, especially re-rolled duct tape. Still something is better then nothing.
Over the course of several years my re-rolled duct tape became brittle and when I tried to use it, when I needed it, the tape came apart. On the other hand, the Cuban fiber tape I had, which was lighter, stronger, and more weather resistant then duct tape, worked really really well.
Last summer my wife and I switched out our rolls of duct tape in favor of ZPacks Dyneema fiber tape.

I carry a three foot section of Tenacious Tape in my repair kit and Gorilla tape on my trekking pole. I replace the Gorilla Tape every few years because it can go bad exposed to the elements and re-rolled on my trekking pole.

For the record I typically take some Leukotape and gaffer tape spun onto little sections of a dowel rod. Cuts way down on the volume.

Yep, forgot to mention the Leukotape on a small pencil.

Crawford or anyone else - how well does tenacious tape work? Advantages & disadvantaged?
Thanks.

Tenacious Tape is great for tent and garment repairs. You can treat it as pretty much permanent. I still prefer duct tape or Gorilla Tape for anything like pack repair.

For bags/quilts, dry bags, tents, and your clothing (to include rain gear) it is excellent. A patch can stay on your jacket for years. If it is a superficial hole in a backpack, Tenacious is the way to go. If you are repairing a strap or such, I would use Gorilla tape.
My 20 degree quilt has two tenacious patches from some pesky mini-bears that wanted to taste it! Darn rodents.

Black Gorilla tape is the stickiest stuff i've ever seen.

I only use Gorilla tape at home but for the trail I take Coghlan's Handy Duct Tape. It is inexpensive and has a peel off backing so it lays flat, is light and compact.
If I’m repairing a strap or other high stress item I use the upholstery thread and needles with a good back stitch. That will hold.
And always keep a piece of Kenyon tape in my kit too for down jackets. It is similar to Tenacious tape.

Tenacious Tape can work as an emergency repair on silnylon, something that the other tapes can't do. Apparently it works well with DCF.

So much info here; I'm glad I started the thread. Tenacious tape seems to be something I should have...my FF bag arrived today and while I hope to care for it effectively, accidents happen. I also have a Zpacks duplex coming, so their tape may also be useful.
Is there much difference between Gorilla tape and duct tape? I've always assumed Gorilla tape was the company just making their own branded duct tape.

I also have a Zpacks duplex coming After you get your Duplex, you may notice that roll of tape is not frequently used. When you use the tape you'll find how strong, durable, and weather resistant the tape is. You'll, I am betting, end up leaving the other tape home. ZPacks ROCKS!
