When I swim at New Smyrna Beach, FL there is often a longshore current (parallel to beach). The last time it was so wicked that I didn't go anywhere as I swam against it... like an ocean treadmill! It was only about 50 feet off the beach and in waist-deep water, so when I got tired I just stood up.

msdoolittle, that makes good sense, but I don’t want to be buying stuff while we are here, if I can help it. Pretty much anything added to our luggage will have to either be left, or displace something else—we were chock-full on arrival, what with bringing backpacking/camping gear and stuff for 4 months. So I’ll look for safe swim beaches—the one near Littleton looks promising, though a non-trivial drive to get over there.

It was only about 50 feet off the beach and in waist-deep water, so when I got tired I just stood up. I’ve experienced that in a swimming hole in a creek. Kind of fun, and easy to escape when ready. But those kinds of currents on ocean beaches can be dangerous—especially for those who don’t realize you just need to swim out of them to the side (or, in your case, stand up! :D )

This is my treadmill work since March 1st.
Date....% Grade....Speed (mph).... Duration (minutes) 3/1 8% 3.7mph 70min
3/2 Rest Day
3/3 10% 3.7mph 50min 8% 3.7mph 20min
3/4 8% 3.7mph 70min
3/5 8% 3.7mph 85min
3/6 8% 4mph 30min 8% 3.7mph 40min
3/7 8% 4mph 50min 8% 3.7mph 20min
I don't plan a lot, just a general idea of how much I want to do each day. I try to challenge myself without getting an overuse injury or just plain wearing myself out. Presently I can comfortably do 8% grade at 3.7mph for extended periods of time. I do not feel it places a strain on me. It's my comfort zone. Upping the speed to 4mph is ok, but after some time I can feel it is tiring me out, so I revert back to 3.7. The same applies to upping the grade. I actually do up the grade often that I don't record, but usually i dial it back to 8% after five or ten minutes.
I am feeling pretty good for a 66 year old guy. My BP averages out about 117/74 with a RHR of 58 or so.

Oh, @idahowalker, yes, I totally get it. And I am currently trying to train for Triathlon, so I am well aware that I need to up my game. I'm just stating, after being sick for over a month, that I am finding it difficult to get back into the game. That is all.

Oh, @idahowalker , yes, I totally get it. And I am currently trying to train for Triathlon, so I am well aware that I need to up my game. I'm just stating, after being sick for over a month, that I am finding it difficult to get back into the game. That is all. Yea, I get that to. I was ill with some crud that kept going around here. I thought I was a bit daffy about being ill for so long, till I found out it was a real and common thing. Bronchitis is what 'they' called it. I was not motivated in the least, sucking down cold and flu medicine like it was going out of style, dreading going to the gym and all that jazz. I was feeling pretty down about working out and even contemplated stopping cause.. well that's where I was at. Since my wife works at a University she got me to go to one of those inter-discipline studies where I learned I was to healthy for the study. That assessment, alone, was enough to reset me, reset my motivations, and so on and so forth. Then, I began to check up on my blood pressure, newly re-motivated, to find my BP was down. That was, for me, being fed the sweetest candy. Working out became not so 'painful'. My wish is to be another little bee on your shoulder saying 'just do it.' I really like reading about your running adventures and walkswithblackflies Spartan race adventures.

Last week went a fair bit better as far as my scheduling goes. M: Spin for 45 minutes while watching The Walking Dead Tu: Treadmill Run for about a mile W: Trainer ride/Snow day road for 7 miles in London. Th: Lap Swim only about 400 yards. Took longer than expected to get to the Community Center due to the Bomb Cyclone the day before. F:Treadmill run 1.5 miles Sa: Dog Walk 2.5 miles Su: Trainer Ride in London 9 hilly miles (I took a wrong turn) Today will be my active rest day with some yoga tonight and then I'll be defining my schedule a little better. I need to, at the very least, get two swims (ideally, three as it is my weakest leg), two bikes and two runs in a week. I may need to re-evaluate my rest day. I want to do Yoga on Monday night, but I'm told by a coach that my rest day should be a rest day and that our bodies need that day to repair itself. So, I'm kind of torn.

A week of recovery/active rest from the Spartan race: M: Abs still aching. Tried to do a set of pullups, and hilarity ensued. I could barely do 2 (I normally do 10 without problem). Walk dog 1.5 miles. Tu: Walk dog 1.5 miles. W: Walk dog 1.5 miles. Th: Walk dog 1.5 miles. 6 mile bike ride with my son. F: Just some walking around an apartment building (for work). My daughter had a play in the evening. Stressful day at work. Fell asleep early. Sa: Walk 1 mile (round trip) in the morning to meet friends for an Irish breakfast at a local restaurant. Walk another mile (round trip) to Carrier dome to attend SU lacrosse game. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Su: Downhill ski all day. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Weather is starting to break. Thursday and Friday were beautiful. Most snow has melted. I assumed most trails would be wet/muddy/icy so I didn't do any trail running or hiking. Maybe later this week. Not a great week, last week, as there were a couple days of travel and unexpected late work days.
M: worked late Tu: trainer W: worked late / also hubby's birthday Th: Swam 600 yards. Packed van and drove to Fruita where it rained F: more rain in Fruita - small walk with the doggos in between rain showers Sa: SUN! Finally. Road 4 miles of single track fun and Hero Dirt. Walked the doggos 2 miles. Comfortable in shorts and short sleeves which was a nice change from this entire winter. Su: started raining again, so we hightailed it out of the area so we wouldn't get stuck in mud. Got home and cleaned. Doggies are exhausted.
